Will the 2020 Democratic nominee be someone who is currently a Senator or governor (including those elected in 2016)? I think it's an interesting question to think about, since it would limit the pool of possibilities to about 70 people.

I think it's likely that they are currently a governor or Senator (or won election to either office in 2016), since winning election in 2018 would not provide enough time to pivot to gain experience and pivot to a presidential campaign. And I think that, despite Trump's success, being a Senator or governor remains the best launching pad for a campaign as it allows candidates to build experience and a national profile.
