What is with this East/West split for Clinton/Sanders?

Even the one county Sanders one in the Eastern part of the state was by less than one point and then there's a county in the center of the state where the split the vote 50/50.

There's a big cultural divide between the Eastern part of the state (agricultural, has Sioux Falls, think Western Iowa or Minnesota) and the Western part of the state (ranching/livestock, less developed, has National Parks, think Wyoming). This divide is pretty neatly delineated by the Missouri River which runs right through the center of the state.

For what it's worth, the one Sanders county in the Northeast has a sizeable Native American population (I was under the impression there was a reservation there but when I looked further I didn't find any evidence of one). It voted for Trump despite being an Obama/Obama/Kerry(!) county.

I just wanted to say that's one of the most aesthetically pleasing maps I've seen.

Unfortunately, it makes the nationwide primary map painful to look at.

I'm pretty sure, the west is more libertarian (like the Mountain West), whereas the east is more conservative (like the Midwest), which redounded to Clinton's favor, whose voters were more religious than Sanders'.

You can observe the same effect on the Republican site:

The antichrist performed much better in the less religious west than in the religious east.

Clinton won all but 4 Counties on the East.

Sanders won all but 2 Counties on the West.

A West County was Tied.

I'm sure a lot of counties were close, though, even though it looks bifurcated due to the map.  I remember Minneahaha county tracking pretty closely with who was ahead in the state, i.e. when Sanders was leading, he was leading Minnehaha, and vice versa, and then Hillary ended up carrying Minneahaha narrowly in the end. (Minnehaha is home to the largest city in SD, Sioux Falls).
