Big protests are expected in Malaysia tomorrow against Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Najib is accused of embezzling over $700 million from the underperforming national sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB (named after his half-baked and widely-derided "1Malaysia" campaign designed to paper over social fractions resulting from decades of Malay supremacist policy). 1MDB came under attention recently after an NYT article detailing the activities of a well connected suspected front-man from Penang, Jho Low.

Najib claims that this money was in fact a political contribution from foreign donors in the Gulf, which surprisingly is not illegal in its own right-- but it's not legal, either (he says they'll have to wait and see). None of his ministers can give a consistent explanation as to how the money was spent, although one, unsurprisingly, blamed the Jews. Malaysians suspect the actual use of the money may be related to his wife Rosmah's Birkin handbag habit.

Of course, it goes without saying on this forum that Najib and his UMNO party remain in office even after losing the popular vote in the 2013 general elections to the Pakatan Rakyat, the now disbanded-coalition led by the now-imprisoned Anwar Ibrahim. Najib has problems within his own party, too. He sacked one of his deputy PM's last month after the deputy called for a looking into Najib's finances. Najib's former patron, former long-time PM and old-time ultra Mahathir Mohamad has become once of his fiercest critics.

It is uncertain if Najib will be able to hold on with mounting pressures. He may survive yet. I am told, however, that there are rumblings that the Malaysian military might, for the first time, be planning to take inspiration from their northern neighbours... We shall see what happens.

So is this Bersih 4.0 now?

Hopefully (assuming elections are allowed to happen) the BN are finally dethroned.

Yep. Protests have continued for the third straight day. Mahathir himself has been marching, calling for the removal of the government.

I don't know much about Malaysian politics, so what are the main political divisions in Malaysia? How does the government work, or is it a dictatorship?

Also, no offense to Rosmah Birkin, but is that what her face naturally looks like? It looks plastic-y, or like some sort of cream. Nobody else in the photo has a face that pale or shiny. Doesn't look natural.

The ruling party since forever is the United Malays National Organization, a technocratic conservative organization representing ethnic Malays. They rule as part of a coalition called Barisan Nasional or National Front which includes a bunch of tiny ethnic based technocratic parties (Indian, Chinese) that do whatever the UMNO tells them to do.

The main opposition is the People's Justice Party, made up mainly of defectors from the UNMO led by Anwar Ibrahim (in jail for sodomy). It is anti-corruption but has little ideology beyond that. The People's Justice Party has good relations with another major opposition party, the Democratic Action Party, which is a more explicitly ideological party (social democratic) but whose appeal is mostly based on Chinese ethnicity.

The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party is the other main party. It is exactly what you would expect. It used to work closely with the other two opposition parties but this year it refused to work DAP so the opposition is splintered.

The DAP is, importantly, the rump of Singapore's ruling People's Action Party left behind when Singapore left Malaysia in 1965. They used to be united with Anwar's party until earlier this year in the Pakatan Raykat (sic?).

And Birkin is not the name of Najib's wife, but rather her bag. Tongue Her name is Rosmah Mansour.

That'll teach me to read the OPs better. Tongue

Anyways, thanks to both of you for the information.

Wait guys-- we now have Bersih 5. Guess I overlooked it in the election aftermath: https://twitter.com/PKinbangkok/status/799824001174339584

Interesting that anti-government protesters have chosen to wear yellow, and pro-government ones red, just as in their northern neighbor.
