What are some places one should go to learn about Nigerian politics

But seriously, there are some basic things to look at with these West African nations which dictate their politics.

Firstly, who colonised the country?

Predominantly French and English, countries colonised in Africa went in vastly different directions according to who first colonised the country. So that is important as the native Africans were quick to adopt any features of their new founded colonialist rules.

The Islamic presence of the Saharan people. The Touregs' are not particularly liked by the blacks yet do have influence in this part of the world.

But unlike any other West African nation, Nigeria has two main drivers. Population and Oil.

Nigeria has one of Africa's biggest online presences (yes, even for legitimate purposes. Still, have at least a good Adblock ready). Just google "Nigerian news" and you will have many online journals to choose from:

Nigeria has a fairly open press, so press reports on national government are accurate insofar as you are not being filtered state propaganda. Of course, English-language papers are biased towards coverage of the south of the country -- I'm not familiar with the northern Hausa press.
