Al Franken was occasionally mentioned as a possible running mate for Hillary Clinton, but was never considered too seriously, most likely because the campaign wanted to come across as serious to contrast with Trump's antics.

Pros:
- Palatable to both progressives and the establishment (progressive voting record, but also an early Clinton backer)
- Popular in his home state of Minnesota, a battleground state in the increasingly important Rust Belt
- Charismatic
- Excellent debater
- Large war chest

Cons:
- May face "traitor" allegations from Bernie or Bust people
- His past as a comedian could be damaging with values voters
- May have trouble connecting with voters
- He would be the first Jewish major party nominee, which has the potential to be a problem
