Should've lost: 1876

Should've won: 1960, 2000

They were controversial elections, too.

Any more?

What are your criteria here for "should have won/lost"? Poll numbers? The status of the economy? It's hard to decide who should have won or lost something when we're all using different standards of what should make someone win.

Not polling, but the overall perception.

Is this based on personal opinion or conditions at the time?

Going by conditions, I would say 1876, 1948 (Truman's bad job approval), and 2016.
