Cool. My minimal and overall I think geographically/demographically reasonable changes to get a Clinton victory are (and these I think are the most obvious changes):

1. Florida Panhandle (Jackson/Liberty/Franklin and west) to Alabama. Rump Florida flips to Clinton.
2. UP of Michigan to Wisconsin. Rump Michigan flips to Clinton.

New result is 276-262 Clinton

Michigan is still close on this, decided by about 16,000 votes in favor of Clinton. Florida is not close, around 100,000 votes in favor of Clinton. (Wisconsin is closer, at least in absolute terms, even with the UP - Trump by around 55,000 votes.)

A friend of mine made Wyoming a 5 EV Dem state. It was an abomination with its capital in Salt Lake City.

Democratic Dream State of Appalachia!

I know it's not perfect, but I got tired of clicking counties...it needs a zoom feature IMO.

Gotta say was kinda surprised it still wasn't enough to flip Ohio I suppose.

Gerrymandered America (Trump 439, Clinton 99)

The 52-EV behometh swing state that combines all of Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, much of New England, and huge portions of Appalachia was a very close Trump win.  I could have gotten a little bit more with a zoom tool as well.

How do I share an image saved on my computer, again?

Any way to form new states? I messed up on Rhode Island and can't recreate it. I don't want to have to start all over.

Agreed. Why does the east make their counties so damn small? Tongue

I am just going to keep rump Rhode Island as is. I'll post a few fancy historical facts in this alternate world. Admittedly, I've made a few monstrous entities dicking around. Honestly, I'm not sure how this America would work.

Businessman Donald John Trump (R - Hudson)/Governor Mike Pence (R - Indiana): 338 EVs, 46.3% PV
Fmr. State Sec Hillary Rodham Clinton (D - Hudson)/Senator Timothy Kaine (D - Tidewater): 200 EVs, 48.0% PV

Gone States: Vermont, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wyoming, Nevada, Alaska, North Dakota, and North Carolina.
New States: Chicagoland, Appalachia, Jefferson, Bay Area, South California, Gadsden, Nueces, and Yazoo (North AL + North MS).
Renamed States: Dakota (South Dakota), Rocky (CO + WY), Pacificia (AL + HI), Transylvania (WV), Tidewater (VA), Deseret (UT), Hudson (Downstate NY).

Largest State: Texas (Population: 25,724,748)
Smallest State: Rhode Island (132,763)

Trump handily carried the 15-EV Idaho.

Other than California, all that Clinton carried in the west were the 5-EV Washington, 3-EV Oregon, 4-EV Minnesota, and 3-EV Hawaii.

It is a Trump 382-156 landslide.

I think your maximum is 51 (the 50 plus making DC bigger).  It lets you get rid of states, though they keep 3 EV despite a population of 0.

And DC will stay at 3 EVs no matter how big it gets because of the constitutional limitation to no more EVs than the smallest state.  I haven't yet tried making every state plus DC big enough for 4 EVs to see if the app will then give DC an 4th EV (as it should).

Three county shifts that together give Clinton the win:
Lake County, Illinois to Wisconsin (flips Wisconsin)
Lucas County, Ohio to Michigan (flips Michigan)
Camden County, New Jersey to Pennsylvania (flips Pennsylvania)

Electoral vote: Clinton 280, Trump 258

Alternatively you could move New Castle County, Delaware to Pennsylvania instead of Camden County, but that flips Delaware to Trump (Hillary would still win the electoral vote 277-261) and makes Delaware the least populous state in the Union by far (and perhaps the smallest geographically, although probably not - but maybe if you count territorial waters where RI has area between the mainland and Block Island while central/southern Delaware would seem to have a fairly small sliver).

for Trump:

overall: Trump 411, Clinton 127

Clinton's EVs: DC 3, IL 11, CA 50, NY 34, HI 4, VT 3, MA 11, CT 7, RI 4.

She won every state by at least 11%

Clinton got 45%+ and lost the following:

ME (6): 49/45 T
OH (18): 50/45 T
GA: untouched
CO (10): 46/46 (C lost by 12K)
MN (10): 46/46 (C lost by 25K)
WI (16): 48/46 T
VA (12): 49/47 T
NH (4): 48/47 T
NC: untouched
NJ (16): 50/47 T
DE (4): 48/47 T
AZ (17): 48/47 T
MI: untouched
MD (7): 48/48 (C lost by 2500)
FL. untouched
PA (16): 48/48 (C lost by 6K)

WA is 48/44 T, NV is 50/44 T, NM is 47/44 T, OR is 51/42 T

for Clinton:

overall: Clinton 438, Trump 100

I partitioned Wyoming and unified the Dakotas. I put states in Southern CA and the Tampa/Orlando corridor.

the closest states are PA, SC, TX, NH, VA, IA, AZ, OH, FL (Miami to Tallahassee), WI, NC, MI, FL 2 (Tampa/Orlando), CO, MO, ME, LA, NM.

Hillary is between 20% and 38% in 14 states and between 46%-50% in 21 states. She wins every state with 10+ electoral votes aside from Super-TN, Super-AR, and Super-OK.

Here's something close to my ideal state map. One state is colored incorrectly by the app as I couldn't get Manhattan transferred, but the hand-filled map below it is accurate. It comes out to a slight Trump win (~280 EV), but is a clear win for an Obama-like candidate. Several of the states are easily winnable for a more conservative Democratic candidate.

How do you split states into multiple sections (i.e. California and Texas)?

The only way that I know of is to "give up" a different state and shift it into the state you want to split.

Yes, I ended up losing one and couldn't get it back unfortunately. I didn't mean to have only 49. I guess you could add Puerto Rico/US Virgin Islands to get back to 50. Tongue

equally sized lower 48 (11ev each)

(hudson should be encroaching into the northern ny boroughs and san bernardino and mid-california should be encroaching into los angeles. also ignore the specks of virginia floating around in appalachia)

i might start a separate thread for this one tbh

Likewise, you can make Idaho a 9 EV D state if you move Seattle into it, resulting in a net 3 EVS for Trump (7 EV R state in new Washington).

smallest contiguity-preserving changes you can make that would flip the result?

I'm making an ideal states map right now.  A couple things I am wrestling with that I will take input on:

-Whether to put Orlando and Tampa (plus suburbs) in Likely R Super Georgia or Leans D South Florida
-Whether to put Knoxville in Appalachia or Tennessee
-Whether to put San Antonio in Rio Grande (capital likely El Paso and includes most of New Mexico plus Texas along the Rio Grande to the Gulf) or South Texas (which includes Houston and Austin)

Only need 5 county switches.  2 for Florida (Baldwin added from Alabama, move Leon to Georgia), and then put Philadelphia with NJ and Mahoning and Trumbull from OH to PA; this flips both PA and OH, and you get 269-269 with Romney winning in the House.
