You can now redraw 2016 by income. Shame you can't zoom in to click the smaller counties.

Here's something close to my ideal state map. One state is colored incorrectly by the app as I couldn't get Manhattan transferred, but the hand-filled map below it is accurate. It comes out to a slight Trump win (~280 EV), but is a clear win for an Obama-like candidate. Several of the states are easily winnable for a more conservative Democratic candidate.

Interesting. You have 49 states here, correct? Or am I miscounting?

Yes, I ended up losing one and couldn't get it back unfortunately. I didn't mean to have only 49. I guess you could add Puerto Rico/US Virgin Islands to get back to 50. Tongue

Hey, since the app now has the 2012 election, I decided to try to recreate your states using that election's map. Here's what it looks like:

What I find most interesting is that the Rio Grande state apparently voted for Romney by a margin of a bit less than 20,000 votes.

Any way to form new states? I messed up on Rhode Island and can't recreate it. I don't want to have to start all over.

I think your maximum is 51 (the 50 plus making DC bigger).  It lets you get rid of states, though they keep 3 EV despite a population of 0.

And DC will stay at 3 EVs no matter how big it gets because of the constitutional limitation to no more EVs than the smallest state.  I haven't yet tried making every state plus DC big enough for 4 EVs to see if the app will then give DC an 4th EV (as it should).

Yeah, I just managed to make every state have at least 4 EVs, and also added Montgomery County, MD to DC to make it big enough for 4 EVs if not for the "no more than any state" limitation, and the app still gave DC just 3 EVs.

2016 with different states, created by allowing current ones to aggressively migrate south. The results are pretty much the same, other than in VA where Dem running mate Tim Kaine broke free of the spell and campaigned harder in the suburbs of his (new) home state. When the spell wore off the democratic party was victorious.

love it!  I was able to use the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Upper Mountain West as a Republican vote sink.  I gave all of the blue counties in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, etc. to Virginia, Texas, North Carolina, Florida... Utah absorbed Nashville, and the black counties in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee were put into the Carolinas and Florida.

^Holding Obama to under 100 in 2012, by packing Northeastern metro areas + New England, and somehow splitting up CA.

You can combine states using this app, which is really neat. I always knew that a state that combined ID, WY, ND, SD, and MT would be the same size (population-speaking) as Louisiana, with 9 electoral votes instead of the 16 they have now, and that having one state instead of 5 would have flipped the election of 2000. What I didnt know until now is that if you add Nebraska to the superstate, it would only end up with eleven electoral votes, the same as Arizona, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Indiana.

Its effect on the Senate would be more severe: a state which had 12 senators would now have 2, both Republicans. Remove 2 Democrats and 8 Republicans from the Senate to account for this, and you'd get a Democrat-controlled upper chamber, 46 to 44.

This shows just how gerrymandered the actual electoral college is. A group of people with the same numbers as Indiana have sextuple the Senate representation and nearly double the electoral college representation, just because of how they're distributed. (though this doesn't flip the 2016 election, but as we saw, changing the EC to do that is trivial)
