What if the US had a run-off election when neither candidate breaks 50% of the vote? Similar to countries like France. Hillary and Trump would face each other in a nationwide contest, with all other candidates eliminated from the ballot.

I think she would win ~ 52.5% versus 47.5%.

Republicans tend to do better when it's not Election Day.  Trump wins.

Is this a runoff, like a different vote being held a few days or weeks later, or just ranked preferences? Because a runoff could mean Clinton looks at the results and makes changes to her strategy, such as focusing more on the Upper Midwest.

No, I mean a run-off one or two weeks later. Direct popular vote, no electoral college.

Angry Trump voters would show up again, feeling such a system is "rigged" or whatever.  Trump still wins in my mind.

Since I've been quoted twice, I should clarify I think NE-2 would be decided by, probably, about 15,000 votes.

Lower turnout would deliver the presidency to the Donald:

Businessman Donald J. Trump (R-NY)........................61,289,736 (50.22%)
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D-NY).......60,754,632 (49.78%)

I think Hillary would probably lose again, but I think she'd do better than in the first round, as some Trump voters began to realize what they were voting for. I heard a story of a West Virginia woman who voted for Trump without knowing he'd repeal Obamacare. Those kinds of voters might possibly switch to Hillary in a second round of voting.

(Unless, of course, the election and runoff were based on popular vote, in which case she'd win twice.)
