Overall 1936.

2004. I hate Bush, but that map is quite aesthetically pleasing. 2000 (LOL NH) and 2016 are not bad either.

2016 was ugly.  Virginia sticks out like a sore thumb.

I like 1976 because it seems so out of place for a post-1960 election, and the result was unpredictable- almost every state was in play.

'76 is pretty close to a map of states I like against state I don't like.

Going by this logic, is there any map that has the South and the West voting against the Midwest and Northeast? Cause that would be mine. Tongue

2008, mostly because Indiana doesn't stick out so much, followed by 1992, because the Clinton win of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

It's not so out of place when you consider that Democrats remained strong in the South well into the 80s and 90s at the state level.

What about Kentucky and Tennessee?

My favorite election was 1928, not because of the results, but because of the trends: many women voting for the first time, especially in immigrant communities; Northern ethnic Catholics and laborers generally flexing their political muscle under Prohibition.

What would make the 1928 map perfect (besides a Smith win, of course?) Switching NY and AL:

out of these, 2004 has the neatest shapes.

However, there are many maps with even neater shapes, such as 1996.

Even if it was a landslide, 1956 had the beautiful arch shape from Missouri through the Deep South (except for Louisiana) up to North Carolina, all in one compact area for Stevenson.

1920 if you flip Tennessee or 1924 if you give Wisconsin to Coolidge.

1964 (though Arizona slightly ruins it), 2004, and 2008 all look quite nice. 1960, 1976, 1992, 1996, and 2016 are all the worst to look at-jumbled messes, all of them.
