Kurz to meet with President VdB in the afternoon to tell him that he's gonna form a coalition with the FPÖ.

Kurz will announce it to the public tomorrow and the intensive talks will start on Wednesday or Friday.

The big unknown now is ... Van der Bellen.

The Standard writes that VdB has "big concerns" about handing over the Interior and Foreign Minister posts to the FPÖ (which means he could refuse to swear in an Interior Minister Strache or a Foreign Minister Hofer).

We'll see what he does ... maybe he's just barking, but not biting.

Chancellor Kern will become the SPÖ's opposition leader in parliament, after a meeting of the SPÖ today in which he received almost full support. He'll also remain party leader.

Sebastian Kurz to hold a press conference in 1 hour (probably to tell the public and media that he chose the FPÖ as coalition partner and that intense coalition talks will start tomorrow).

In the afternoon, Strache and the FPÖ accepted Kurz's invitation to coalition talks:

http://derstandard.at/2000066601352/Schwarz-Blau-befindet-sich-in-den-Startloechern

Both Kurz and Strache have already appointed the negotiating teams for each side and the first talks will start tomorrow already.

Kurz did not make any demands on possible cabinet members (such as refusing to grant the FPÖ the Interior or Foreign Ministry because VdB has "some concerns").

Kurz said that he wants to have a coalition ready by Christmas and that he wants his coalition to be "solidly pro-European, but subsidiary instead of centralized" and against all forms of anti-semitism.

Strache and the FPÖ was quite calm and diplomatic when asked about Van der Bellen having concerns about handing the Interior and Foreign Ministries to the FPÖ. He said that he doesn't expect VdB to be a hurdle, because of the almost 60% the new coalition has and because of the compentence of his future cabinet members.

Strache also said that coalition talks should not be about duration, but about quality and substance - which means they could take longer than Kurz's deadline of Christmas. But Strache also expects swift talks.

These are the negotiating teams on both sides (doesn't mean that they are future cabinet members, altough some might be):

Austrian election winner Sebastian Kurz invites far-right Freedom Party to enter government

Austrian conservative leader Sebastian Kurz has said he will try to form a coalition government with the right-wing Freedom Party after winning this month's election.

Mr Kurz's People's Party and the Freedom Party campaigned for tougher immigration controls, quick deportations of asylum-seekers whose requests are denied and a crackdown on radical Islam.

Austria's president tasked Mr Kurz on Friday with forming a government.

Mr Kurz said that after meetings with all the other parties in parliament he decided to invite the Freedom Party to enter talks on a coalition - a decision that was widely expected.

He told reporters that his prospective partner, Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache, had shown "a will to bring about change in Austria together".

Mr Kurz, 31, is foreign minister in the outgoing government under Chancellor Christian Kern, a centre-left Social Democrat, and is on track to become Europe's youngest leader.

He said he will try to form a government by Christmas. His party finished first in the October 15 election, but no party was close to a parliamentary majority on its own.

He said a "basic condition" for the new administration is "a clear pro-European direction".

"Austria can only be strong if we are not just members of the European Union, but also actively help to strengthen the European Union," he said.

Austria will hold the EU's rotating presidency in the second half of next year.

Sebastian Kurz will become the World's youngest head-of-state (31) once he's sworn in as Chancellor in December or so.

The next youngest are the leader of San Marino, followed by Kim-Jong Un in North Korea and Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand.

Where would Justin Trudeau rank as he is often seen as being quite youthful, but now with Kurz, Ardern, and Macron he doesn't seem so young.  Mind you he also looks ten years younger than his age.

I'm excited about the possible introduction of a national initiative/referendum law. Both FPO and OVP supported it in the campaign. Assuming it would require 2/3 votes to pass, would Neos, or the Pilz group or the SPO be likely to also support it?   Getting this through would be a major accomplishment, and being a neighbor to Switzerland should help. Having grown up in California I like our initiative/referendum system. Its not perfect by any means, but I like having the electorate with a direct say in things.
