Why is the Left so badly organised in Austria outside of Styria? It must be the only Western European country (aside from us FirstPastTheFailure losers) without a significant party to the left of the Social Democrat/Green Liberal mainstream.

(My thought is the KPO should, err, probably change their name)

Tbf I support Ukraine, but oppose sanctions. The sanctions just hurt ordinary Russians and inflame nationalism even further - like most sanctions for that matter.

I presume that you mean FPTP in the sense that he wants to introduce a mixed system right? He isn't going full idiot and endorsing British style FailPastThePost ... right?

Van der Bellen about the fear of terror, climate change and fast technological changes:

"When I was a kid in school, I was looking down the 3 meter board in the swimming lesson and was like F**k, really ? But I eventually took the jump. I also took the 5 meter jump ..."

Tongue

Takes "swearing in the new president" to a new level.

Yeah, I'm a "naive left leftist" or whatever, but I definitely think the state should step in with young children in hijabs. Totally not appropriate, and not even in grounds with mainstream theology.

That's a great picture of Kern they use in the bar chart, wow.

Kurz? Ah, not so much.

He probably would be out of the water if he had said "every person, regardless of gender or religion".

More signs of an ongoing election campaign:

The ÖVP attacks Kern as a Communist in a 58-page "manifest".

The first page is listing 10 major "bans", similar to the 10 commandments, that Kern wants to impose on the Austrian middle-class, companies and the state.

http://derstandard.at/2000056846957/OeVP-warnt-mit-Broschuere-im-Sowjet-Stil-vor-Rot-Gruen

what are the bans? Are they suggesting he will start putting people in gulags?

People really think Kern is less attractive than Kurz. Poor taste, Österreich.

Anyway, am I the only one kind of surprised how well the ovp does with students? I always thought they were the party of decaying old rural types.

No. Why would he wanna do this ?

Kurz has said in the past that he prefers to keep conscription because it helps integration of foreigners and keeps the radical elements out (in a professional army, it's more likely that radicals volunteer, whereas the conscript army is a broad image of the population as a whole).

Besides, there was A) a referendum in Austria in 2013 in which 60% of voters wanted to keep the conscript army, and B) the FPÖ is also for keeping it and C) this is not an issue at all right now.

because he making "new ovp" and i was thinking he will end that relic of the past since austria is last country in eu with conscription, but ok thats internal topic in austria. ovp - fpo coalition would be good for balkans.

Finland and Greece also have conscription armies and Sweden will re-introduce it with July 1st.

Macron wants to introduce conscription as well iirc.

Tender can you clarify what exactly Pilz' idealogy is? Economically to the left of the Green leadership, but more critical of immigration?

Does Pilz occupy the same sort of niche that Hans Peter Martin used to fill?

The posters do somewhat remind me of VVD campaign posters. But the VVD posters basically were policy proposals without any picture added, they did it to stand out because all other posters prominently featured the leaders of other parties (and a lot of people still weren't sure whether Rutte was PM material, it's pretty hilarious how the most successful VVD leader of all time was on track to become the least successful after 4 years as leader before things dramatically changed in 2010). But the messages in Kurz' posters are rather empty (the messages on the VVD posters were simplistic, but atleast they were concrete proposals). And you'd think all of the ÖVP campaign posters would prominently feature Kurz because their entire campaign seems to be based on Kurz.

It makes sense: after all, I can totally see the campaign paranoid about overegging their frontman's popularity and suffering a backlash.

I think we've discussed before on atlas that German-speakers have a habit of making corny posters. Not sure about "It is time", as a slogan either.

I'd vote tactically to try and get Pilz or Greens above the threshold. I think the best thing to hope for would be for SPO to leave government for a nasty OVP/FPO government that alienates people, and try and build a SPO led coalition government with NEOS/Greens/Pilz for next election.

Btw has there ever been talk of abolishing the threshold?
