A few days before he makes his big return to Iowa (to campaign for Lykam, but presumably also to drop breadcrumbs for 2020), Martin O’Malley does a an interview with Alan Colmes, which you can listen to in full here:

http://video.foxnews.com/v/5250156109001/?#sp=show-clips
https://radio.foxnews.com/2016/12/15/omalley-the-gop-was-hijacked-by-the-fascist-campaign-of-donald-trump/

In it, O’Malley makes clear that his strategy for setting himself apart from the rest of the 2020 field is through liberal use of the f-word:

Good on him. He's always been extremely anti-Trump. See "immigrant-bashing carnival barker."

This kind of thinking is not the way to beat Trump. O'Malley had his chance, and showed people he has no business running a national campaign.

Actually, he isn't. Anti-Trump Republicans wants us to believe everything was awesome with the party before Trump "hijacked" it. But, in fact, Trump's GOP is a logical consequence of the direction Republicans were already following for years. I'm surprised a Democrat is picking up this garbage.

I agree. I was just talking about the quote in the title though.

I really like Martin O'Malley for his stances on climate change, he's a real pusher for technological advances in the solar market and I like that. I think he'd be a good Energy Secretary. I'm sure he's going to run in 2020 because he'll get a fair shake during the debates.

If Donald trump is the monster that liberals say that he is, then he will be an easy target for just about any Democratic nominee in 2020.

Well, I understand his point, although I would not go so far and describe the Donald as a fascist. However, actually almost all presidents are/have been "half-elected". Even someone with barely above 50% of the popular vote.

He's right and he's good on the issues. But I can't get past just how terrible a campaign he ran in 2016. I don't see a path for him in 2020. He looked and sounded like a robot reading from an inner script during every democratic debate - it was horrific. Hillary seemed super authentic and folksy compared to O'Malley.

Let's dispel with the fiction that the Republican Party has EVER - yes, ever - been a totally acceptable institution to modern progressives.  Of course it was going to seem terrible to you before Trump; Never Trump Republicans aren't exactly concerned what a bunch of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents think, and them voicing issue with the direction Trump took the party is largely out of serious concern for the philosophical direction the party should take ... they couldn't care less if you think that's some hollow or too-late concern, because THEY DON'T. I refrained from posting snarky reply to this and thought about it.

O'Malley was a guy who got the worst of the DNC being in the tank for Hillary.  Had he been the candidate, he may well have beaten Trump.

O'Malley's "All Lives Matter" would, if he had been nominated, have been a plus for him, and actually may have de-racialized the legitimate issues surrounding the issue of police behavior and oppressive local ordinances the exist to raise money from the underclasses to avoid raising taxes.

He's boring, but he didn't have the baggage of Hillary.  He wasn't that Special Snowflake that would be cracking a glass ceiling, but he wasn't a shrill, pandering hypocrite that evoked disgust in folks whose votes she needed, and whose votes previous Democratic candidates received.  He may be seen as a victim of the DNC and a man entitled to a REAL shot for the Presidency.  I don't see him as being nominated, but I see him as a guy with a shot at a viable candidacy.
