What if McCain had picked Mitt Romney instead of Sarah Palin? Would the map look something like this?

Barack Obama/Joseph Biden: 382
John McCain/Mitt Romney: 156

If anything, picking Romney as his running mate would cause McCain to do better, considering Palin was a trainwreck of a pick. Obama would most likely win still, but NC might have voted Republican with a McCain/Romney ticket.

Little to no change, maybe McCain does a little better. A VP's effect is often overstated.

I think McCain would have won at least North Carolina, Indiana, all Nebraska's districts as well as Michigan (due to the fact that Romney was born there and because Romney's presence on the ticket brings economic credibility to McCain on a time of economic crisis), New Hampshire (due to McCain's popularity in NH and because of Massachusetts' bordering NH) and maybe even Florida (because Florida's 2008 results were close even with Sarah Palin and it would have been better for McCain with Romney on the ticket) and Nevada.
