Early to Mid 300 AL: Aftermath (I)

Clash of the Stag and the Dragon:

Locked in an apparent stalemate after the Baratheon loyalists had captured Dragonstone and Viserys had stormed Bronzegate both claimants to the throne prepared to change their respective positions, taking several risks along the way. Many battles were fought between the Stags and the Dragons, one of them decisive:

Bronce Yohn rides South: Finally allowed to march South to battle the Targaryens, Yohn Royce pressed ahead through the Kingsroad and smashed the forces of House Ryger at a series of skirmishes. Having cleared the roads that led to the Vale, Royce pressed ahead at full force against Maidenpool, barely defended by a small contingent led by Lord Darry and a landing force of 5,000 Lysene troops sent by Prince Aegon. Royce triumphed against the revolting Riverlords (capturing Darry) and then ambushed the Lysene as they rearranged their forces, dispersing, capturing or killing the entire force.

Battle of Gulltown: Despite the Gulltown blockade being close to an end by the command of the Targaryen fleet to march South as quickly as possible the unsuspecting Lady Lysa ordered an attack to break the blockade despite the large difference in numbers. A battle raged across the harbor, the Arryn fleet ending up mostly sunk or burnt after inflicting heavy casualties on the combined Targaryen fleet, which sailed south damaged.

Stormlander Campaign: Viserys rearranged his forces, assigning Ser Barristan and Prince Oberyn to lead the Dornish host and his personal army to the Reach to battle Lord Tarly. An attempt by Prince Oberyn to ride the unruly dragon Aeryxes led to the Dornish Prince getting one of his arms badly burnt, halting plans to turn him into a dragonrider. Before the armies left to the Reach Viserys led them towards Parchments, securing a large part of the Stormlands and the fortress itself before departing West. An attempt to force a change in sides from House Tarth failed, however, Lord Tarth angrily denouncing Viserys for the apparent disappearance of her daughter in King's Landing.

Liberation of Duskendale: Unaware of the disaster at Maidenpool, Lord Ryger and a small force of 1,500 Rivermen marched South, securing Duskendale after the withdrawal of the Dothraki Khalassar to Harrenhal and narrowly avoiding the sellsword armies that Khal Drogo had hired and sent to Westeros. Soon they were joined by another 5,000 Volantene contingent sent by Prince Aegon, which successfully camped closed to the abandoned and chaotic King's Landing.

Battle of the Gullet: Viserys made the risky gambit of riding Rhaellar and flying with Aeryxes as well to join his combined fleet as it sailed south, fully intending to launch an assault on the Baratheon fleet before sailing to Oldtown. His plans came to a sudden end due to the decision of Edric Baratheon to sail with his fleet North, intending to reach the Vale. By the time both fleets suddenly discovered each other across the Gullet Edric had the upper hand, fighting the damaged Targaryen fleet and having the advantage of the Redwyne Fleet being days away from their position. On the dark side for both, a storm was soon approaching.

The initial hours of the battle proved vicious, both fleets locking themselves up in close combat as Viserys and his dragons burnt several Baratheon ships, forcing Edric and his admirals to fight as close as possible to discourage the use of dragon fire. Despite the numbers being on Edric's favor the dragons proved a reliable weapon, forcing a tactical stalemate as ship after ship caught fire. It was almost dusk when Viserys launched his dragons against the Baratheon flagship, and the Stags concentrated all fire on the coming beasts. It was there that, fatefully, a rain of arrows pierced the skull of Rhaellar, hurling her and Viserys towards a ship set ablaze.

Viserys Targaryen never emerged from the fire. Aeryxes went berserk after the loss of Viserys and Rhaellar, burning ships from both fleets as the coming storm soon took over the scene, separating the fleets and crushing many surviving units. Admiral Aurane Waters (Salladhor Saan having died in the storm) would take a few days to gather the surviving Targaryen ships across the coast of Rosby and Duskendale. Edric (who almost perished in the storm) and a large part of his forced barely made it Dragonstone. His Regent, Lord Bryce Caron, was also lost in the battle.

The Khal in Harrenhal:

Fresh from a resounding blow against the Targaryens by sacking King's Landing, Khal Drogo wasted little time in staying in the area. After overseeing the execution of Grand Maester Pycelle and the bastard Gendry Waters his Khalassar marched back on the mighty castle of Harrenhal. As some offers began to show up for some of the captives Khal Drogo negotiated a lucrative deal with the Free City of Lys, returning Magister Ormellen to his city in return for free passage for new sellsword forces that were hired with all the captured gold.

With his sellswords landing unmolested as the Baratheons and the Targaryens bled each other dry, the Khal sat on a much larger army now. Yet it was clear he was not safe, for a botched assassination attempt by a cook almost killed Drogo, and a spy was captured after trying to introduce himself on Daenerys's room. The intruder was identified as Brown Ben Plumm, sellsword captain in service to Viserys.

The Northern Revolt:

Faced with such complicated odds, and having taken steps to ensure the safety of some of her family members, Lady Catelyn Stark decided to yield after having fought to lead the North. Tired and exhausted due to the strain of losing a son and a husband she relented at last to the demands of the many revolting lords, and scored one minor success to her name by ensuring the name of Lord Wyman Manderly was the one accepted by the rebel army and Houses Umber and Karstark to become Lord Regent. The revolt defused despite the strong distrust of the Northern Lords towards the Wildlings (several skirmishes continue to take place among the Umber border), it ended on a somber note as ravens from Moat Cailin informed that Lord Roose Bolton had been poisoned. Ramsay Snow was also victim to an attempted assassination in the Dreadfort, falling into a deep coma.

Far towards the North, King Mance Rayder took steps to secure the safety of his people, attempting to prevent full-scale war against the Northern Lords and find ways to feed the Wildlings. Despite having acquired a wealth of knowledge from the library of Castle Black and having successfully rearranged the defences of the area the remnants of the Night's Watch and Umber forces continue to fight wildling parties, and with Winter setting across the North for good the chances of a harvest are close to none. Already a few dozen wildlings are reported to have died of hunger.

Early to Mid 300 AL: Aftermath (II)

Ironborn invasion of the Westerlands:

Seizing power effectively, Euron Greyjoy soon silenced or sidelined many of his opponents to become King Regent of the Iron Islands (technically still sworn to the captive Theon), gathering the remnants of the Ironborn power to sail to the Westerlands to avenge Asha and save the thousands of warriors trapped. While House Lannister unsuccessfully attempted to bribe the Ironborn into surrender and its armies gathered to strike, Euron sailed back, aided by the dark magic of his warlocks.

Battles of Casterly Rock: Having burned Lord Blacktyde and Lady Redwyne (and her unborn son) Euron sailed unnaturally fast, relieving Lannisport and leaving a small garrison as he prepared for the decisive battle. With Ser Jaime Lannister riding as fast he could to relieve Casterly Rock, Euron concentrated his forces, and using the power of the warlocks to enhance the fighting trance of his men and weaken the resolve of the Lannister forces the Ironborn stormed Casterly Rock. The fight was intense due to the defences of the fortress and its many underground passages, and Euron almost sensed victory when his men stormed one of the main halls where King Tommen was located.

Staying behind to guard the King Ser Arys Oakheart found his death, and it was only the timely intervention of the sellsword Bronn and the Lannister household guard who rescued the Lannister royal family (Tommen, Myrcella and Lady Tarly). As Ser Jaime approached the outskirts of the Ironborn position Euron was forced to abandon the castle, but not before being notified Lord Tyrion had met his end falling to the sea when cornered by a group of warriors. Ser Jaime's relentless assault broke the Ironborn lines, forcing the host to return to Lannisport with a few Westerlander hostages but short of the crucial hostages. Ser Jaime was then reported to mourn his late brother with inmense grief.

Reach Civil War:

Lord Tarly has triumphed against the Tyrells, becoming the main power in the Reach as a large host amassed behind him. Still, such success would only be fleeting until he consolidated his position, and the Targaryen Loyalists were determined to crush him.

First Battle of Brightwater Keep: As the forces of Houses Rowan and Hightower layed siege of Brightwater Keep and expected reinforcements from other Targaryen forces Lord Tarly struck fast and decisively. Deploying as much as 30,000 men against the outnumbered Reachlords he broke their siege lines and crushed their camps one by one, the Hightowers faring only marginally better than the Rowans, who were killed, captured or suffered from defections almost to a man. Soon the survivors returned to Oldtown or marched North, Tarly bolstering his ranks with some defecting untils and securing the peaceful surrender of the Florents in exchange from mercy.

Second Battle of Brightwater Keep: Lord Tarly engaged in extensive efforts to bring the Reach into heel, his task aided by a botched attempt by Viserys to offer Highgarden to House Oakheart should they join his side. Having angered a few pro-Targaryen lords with this, Tarly used promises, threats, pledges and offers of all sorts, cementing the loyalty of most of the region as the news of Viserys's death spread. In the meantime, Prince Oberyn, Ser Barristan and the combined Dornish-Targaryen army had done a punishing march from the Stormlands and Dorne to confront Lord Tarly, finally arriving near the Mander to confront the Tarly vanguard. The resulting battle turned inconclusive, as an attempt to encircle Tarly was broken by the Reach cavalry and further Dornish assaults were brought to a halt.

In the aftermath, and as Oberyn and Tarly set their hosts in defensive positions opposite each other, Prince Aegon Targaryen, the Golden Company and a mixed Lysene-Volantene army landed at last in Oldtown.

Mid 300 AL: Aftermath:

The Stag in the Iron Throne:

Having recovered from the bloody struggle at the Gullet, the forces of young King Edric Baratheon wasted no time to take advantage of the new situation. Leaving a still sizable force in Dragonstone, the young Stag led the armies lent by Myr and sailed into Blackwater Bay, soon reaching the chaotic and near anarchic King's Landing (which hadn't recovered from the chaos of Drogo's sacking). For a few days the Baratheon armies struggled and fought armed bands across the city, securing street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.

Soon most of the city was brought into an uneasy control, as despite the work of the gangs (suspected to be led by Sher Shadrich) the crowds were swift to embrace Edric as the Baratheon heir, having kept their support for the long-deceased Renly still. Amidst cheering Edric and his men seized the Red Keep and the Iron Throne, leading to a dramatic scene. Off to the Red Keep rode the Stranger's Knight himself, kneeling before Edric and recognizing him as the true King. Ordered to remove his helmet, the knight revealed himself as the missing Brienne of Tarth, who had donned the armor after the first Stranger's Knight had disappeared to avenge Renly.

Despite the support of the smallfolk the city is still facing hunger, and threats to security have become imminent after Edric was almost poisoned. Some lords of his entourage uncovered the plot before its execution, capturing the young Lady Elia Sand of Dorne as the responsible.

The Khal in Maidenpool:

After selling several captured lords to their Houses, Khal Drogo had rested his forced enough to march. Leaving a small force behind him the Khalassar and the sellsword forces of the Khal swiftly marched towards the east, their sights set on Maidenpool and the weakened forces of Lord Yohn Royce, fresh from a victory against the pro-Viserys forces. With the Khalassar harassing the Valemen and preventing them from an escape General Cime Remys led a shock assault against Lord Royce, heavily outnumbering his forces. Despite a gallant resistance the Knights of the Vale stood no chance due to numbers, and died almost to a man. The head of Lord Royce was delivered before the Khal by Remys himself.

The news proved terrible for the morale in the Vale of Arryn after the deaths of Lord Royce and several leading lords and knights from the area, the blow becoming more critical as terrible news arrived from the Eyrie: Lady Sansa Stark had been poisoned, and was close to death.

The travels of Euron Greyjoy:

Unwilling to continue the bloody struggle against the Lannisters, Euron Greyjoy and the Ironborn prepared to chase a different target. Setting fire to most of Lannisport in a most ruinous way (and killing thousands) the fleets of the Iron Islands sailed towards the east and the Narrow Sea, fighting a large series of naval battles:

Shield Islands raid: Euron readily placed a third of the fleet under the temporary control of Lord Orkwood, ordering a raid towards the Reach fleets still guarding the Iron Islands. Lord Orkwood executed a brilliant series of moves, isolating parts of the Shield Islands to fight them one by one. Within a few days virtually the entire fleet had been captured or sunk, leaving the islands unprotected as Orkwood sailed south.

Oldtown raid: Soon reuniting the fleet while adding several captured Reach vessels, Euron pulled off an even more daring raid, preparing to attack Oldtown by night. Supported by the dark magic of his warlocks Euro struck at the unprepared Targaryen fleet, negating any advantage of them due to the night, the surprise and the Ironborn tactics. For the whole night the Ironborn fought before leaving at dawn, having burned off most of the Targaryen fleets while capturing dozens of vessels for their much enlarged fleet.

Dorne raids: Fresh from the coup at Oldtown, Euron and his fleets sailed east, attacking as many Dornish ships as possible and leading a series of raids across the coastline, managing to burn several areas while facing heavy resistance from the well-prepared Dornish lords. Unable to make more damage the Ironborn then moved to the Stepstones, intercepting several merchant fleets carrying valuable food to Dorne. After such a long struggle Euron finally was forced to halt near Tarth, where his fleet was joined by newly-hired sellsword companies.

Struggles of the North:

Having reached Winterfell to assume his regency Lord Wyman Manderly began to work hard to restore control over the North, securing the support (enthusiastic or north) of virtually all houses for his regency over the young Brandon Stark. In Castle Black King Mance was fighting hard to prevent the demise of his people, enjoying an early success by redoubling hunting efforts and building extra shelter for the wildlings. The news were followed by the news that wildling stragglers in Craster's Keep were requesting urgent support, being under heavy attack from unknown forces.

Around the same time several Baratheon ships arrived in Eastwatch by the Sea, meeting with forces from Mance Rayder  to deliver them a mysterious shipment. The news have been badly received across the North, with several houses severing their ties to the Baratheons in response for what they see as Edric's support of the wildlings. Already House Umber has ambushed and killed a small wildling group, whereas an ambush by House Karstark has resulted in a defeat for the Northerners. It is believe the lords send raven after raven to Winterfell demanding the armies of the North are mobilized to march to Castle Black and put an end to the wildlings.

The Battles of the Roseroad:

Fresh from a victory at Brightwater Keep but facing the double threat of the Dornish armies set to his north and the forces of Aegon Targaryen in Oldtown Lord Randyll Tarly appeared to be lost, more than outnumbered by his many enemies. Unwilling to accept such a situation Lord Tarly took a bold step, increasing his ranks with former prisoners and leaving a few dozen men at his camp to pretend he was still on the area. A night march was started, and Tarly marched south (with the Dornishmen only blocking a march north) with the intention to intercept Aegon.

In the meantime the Dornishmen had sent Queen Dowager Arianne all the way into Oldtown, where she was rapidly married off to Aegon (it was only a few days after the wedding that it became clear she was pregnant from Viserys). Staying behind for a few days Aegon left his forces marching north to ambush Tarly, but unprepared for an unexpected frontal assault. To his merit Tarly outsmarted Lord Connington and the large Targaryen force, taking them by surprise in the Roseroad. Aided by an advantage in numbers and the surprise element, Tarly's vanguard broke through the Targaryen forces to split them, isolating and crushing several separate units. Only the Golden Company refused to broke down, retreating in good order with a portion of the army as Lord Connington found death at the hands of young Dickon Tarly.

Unaware of the battle Aegon had set off from Oldtown after bedding his young bride, meeting the remnants of his retreating army just as Tarly was prepared for a second battle. A bloody struggle ensued as the Targaryen forces attempted to set another line of defence, yet again broken by the Reach forces. The decisive encounter was the third one, fought on the vicinity of Oldtown. It was here that the Golden Company finally broke due to the sustained pressure, allowing the Reach cavalry to sweep in the rear, killing Ser Rolly Duckfield and the royal bodyguards and capturing young Aegon.

Having taken the most valuable of hostages Lord Tarly was forced to halt his exhausted forces outside Oldtown, where the Golden Company (still a fearsome fighting force) locked itself alongside Queen Arianne. Soon afterwards news reached Tarly that the Dornishmen were on the move, having discovered the trick a few days ago. His road to the north was now truly cut off.

On the other side, Edric Baratheon now holds King's Landing, and your plans for a statue of your beloved Petyr are going well. As the knights of the Vale demand the remaining forces to the Vale to finally leave the region in aid of Edric, will you allow it?

Mid to Late 300 AL: Aftermath:

The Capture of The Huntsman:

Randyll Tarly had his back up against figurative and literal walls when his forces were met by Oberyn Martell and Barristan Selmy's, and immediately locked into a fierce fight. Tarly had his forces in strong defensive positions and was fighting at a standstill until the Golden Company and the Tyroshi mercenaries took him in the rear once they saw battle had joined. In spite of this, thousands would lie dead before his men attempted to flee, his own generals dispersing into separate units in their attempts to cut free. Quentyn Martell distinguished himself by cornering Tarly and forcing him to submit, though he was nearly slain by the older and wiser man when challenged, and had to be bailed out by Archibald Yronwood. When the day was done, the Reachmen who didn't manage to flee threw down their arms and yielded, providing thousands of captives and mouths to feed. Dickon Tarly was wounded, but managed to flee and with a sizeable group of men is now racing to Highgarden.

Perhaps most importantly of all, Aegon Targaryen was recovered, underfed and abused, but alive.

That night, Oberyn Martell was on the verge of drinking his wine when he noticed a strange aroma drifting from it; it was confirmed to be poison, and the guards reported almost immediately afterward a group of men had been caught trying to break into the holding pen of Randyll Tarly. They admitted under duress they had been bought and paid for by associates from the Vale of Arryn, but it was unclear as to whose exact order it had been.

The Moon of His Life:

There were none to stand in the way of the khalasar as it continued it tyranny throughout the Riverlands; small holdfasts fell fast and easily, and only larger castles and fortresses managed to remain untouched by the horselords, though any remaining crops and smallfolk were raped and pillaged. As they were encamped a few days ride away from Fairmarket, Lord Harroway's town having been sacked the week previous to provide further fuel for his campaign, Drogo was in the midst of having his hair cared for by his khaleesi while being read news of the fall and capture of Saltpans when a crossbow thrum rent through the air, piercing the throat of his silver haired wife. As he held her in his arms and the life leaked out of her, his bloodriders apprehended the man, dressed in the motley garb of a Tyroshi. The man held his tongue even through rigorous torture and now awaits the Khal's wroth.

Upon reaching Fairmarket the Khal was mildly surprised to see banners twirling in the sun bearing a trout...

The Call of the Dragon to The Kraken:

Under the command of Lord Orkwood, the coast along Blackwater Bay and Gullet stretching from Claw Isle to Duskendale were heavily raided by Ironborn. The newly reformed Iron Fleet struck first at the home of House Celtigar; the island offered no resistance aside from the castle itself, which was stormed with light casualties due to its small garrison. The treasures of the ancient house were few but great in value; relics dating back to Valyria were found, mostly trinkets and the greataxe of House Celtigar was not recovered. After a heavy line of questioning however, the Ironborn weedled out the bit of information they were truly sent for: the location of a horn said to call krakens from the deep. Hidden in the tombs of the house's forefathers, a strange banded conch was found incised with strange runes. Grown, iron hard men claimed more than just the ocean could be heard when placing an ear near...

After this conquest, the Iron Fleet assaulted Driftmark. Without sizable garrison, much like Claw Isle this castle fell with little contest. Lord Orkwood allowed those of high enough birth to attempt to parley with the king of salt and rock in person rather than speak directly for his liege, though a raven brought expected news from the isle of Dragonstone, its occupants asking for aid against King Euron Greyjoy and his ironborn.

For it was to the ancient seat of House Targaryen that Euron headed directly. He set his blockade, and the next dawn blew the fiery horn he brought back from his travels. A great cry was heard, of both pain and longing, and it was not long before the form of a great winged beast could be seen. Before he had reached the king's vessel however, a cry of alarm went up from the watching ironborn: a fleet approached on the horizon. In surprise his horn blower broke off early and fell to the deck coughing blood while men raced to battle positions. Within minutes they turned to meet the foe and battle joined.

While he had the numbers, many of the largest warships had gone with the Ironfleet, and his smaller reaving vessels had difficulty at first bringing to heel the great titans of the Royal Fleet. Eventually Edric's fleet was forced to flee, or rather those that remained. 5 ships were boarded and the rest sunk, while the Ironborn took moderate casualties. Only 13 remained at the end of the day with the Baratheon Fleet, limping into Blackwater Bay. At this point Euron abandoned his blockade and retreated to the Whispers to meet with the Iron Fleet.

Later that evening after taking a thrall to bed, Euron Greyjoy awoke to find her loosening his dagger in its sheath. She was drowned soon after, but not before begging forgiveness and claiming to have been a whore in the Vale, chosen and sent by Lysa Arryn herself...

Mid to Late 300 AL: Aftermath(II)

The King on the Wall:

Mance Rayder would not sit idly by and let the frost and worse take surround him; hunting parties in the Gift were mildly successful but are reporting a growing scarceness of game as well as brushes with hunting parties of Northmen. Tormund Giantsbane was given command of a party to scout beyond the wall and round up any straggling free folk. A prominent party led by Mother Mole sent to the area around Craster's Keep was caught in a sudden ice storm and only one managed to return to report back to Tormund. He claims that Craster's sacrifices to the Others have made it a stronghold of dark magic and that it may be impenetrable... There was no sign of the Enemy but the wall's numbers continue to grow as stragglers flee for its safety from the growing cold. Even with the rationing of supplies however, with so many mouths to feed it will be impossible to sustain this large number in so desolate one place for long.

Scouts also report northerners are gathering at several prominent fortresses throughout the North, with word reaching even the wall of a Northern movement to retake the wall...

The Stag on the Barbed Throne:

Edric Baratheon makes an uneasy seat upon the Iron Throne, with many disparate factions still remaining in King's Landing. With an influx of troops from Storm's End however, he manages to keep the peace. The situation with food once more is becoming strained now with so many refugees from the Riverlands and beyond as well as crime being on the rise with so many armed men roaming the Crownlands. A man named Troy and using the surname Darklyn has brought heads he claims are from the Brotherhood loose in the Riverlands, and that with the support of King Edric he will lead the charge to calm the region and place confidence of the riverfolk back in the hands of the throne. He claims to be the last of the line of Darklyn though many think this claim dubious... In return for bringing the Brotherhood down he asks for the rights to hold Duskendale once more after the mercenaries there are ousted.

As news flows in of the battle about Dragonstone, Edric Baratheon collapsed at dinner. He was found to have been poisoned despite drastic measures taken in regards to his security. Maesters have been tending him constantly and he is reportedly out of danger though will remain bed ridden for some time. A knight of the Vale has been taken prisoner who reportedly was in connection to the plot on the young king's life. From his bed, Edric has sworn in Brienne of Tarth to the Kingsguard with a very divided opinion in regards to her appointment.

On a positive note, recruitment in the Crownlands has begun to yield results with just over 500 men having enlisted to fight for King Edric. With Duskendale remaining occupied by Targaryen forces however, these efforts are slowed for the time being.

With action in the Narrow Sea so heavy, it has been difficult for trade ships to secure food contracts from the free cities, though some is beginning to filter in. Ships sent to the Northern lords are being raided and taken over, resulting in no trader willing to make the journey anymore. Food shipments to the wall have been even more scarce as the northerners begin to take to the seas on their new vessels. There are offers of contracts to ship directly to king's landing from Myr, but they are quite pricy.
