There are two very similar, centrist candidates who basically just try to wrestle over the most agreed upon popular views, each presenting themselves as closer to such a view, with only minor differences? I could see this playing out easily.

No. The Democrats will nominate a very weak candidate essentially forfeiting the election and 2020 will be like 1984.

I don't see either party nominating a centrist.

Trump may or may not carry through depending on the disaster that may or not occur. If he does leave before 2020, Pence will replace him.

The Democrats can't afford putting up a centrist nominee next cycle. It looks like they'll make an attempt to listen to progressives and nominate someone who could unify both wings of the party.

So no, I don't see it happening.

I sure hope not. One Supreme Court decision like Bush v. Gore was one too many.

(Oh, is that not what you meant?)

Trump could end up centrist in policy, even if he's extremist in some aspects of his style (assuming the US isn't heavily damaged or destroyed in a war). This would be an optimistic view of Trump.

In that case, a centrist Democrat could win the nomination. Progressives don't hold a choke on the nomination, and if primary voters think a far leftist would surely lose, they might not pick one.

Well it could be another very close election, but seeing as Trump is not really like either Gore or Bush if he runs then know it won't be like 2000. Anyways I also doubt the Democrats will nominate another Southerner for a while.
