let's say that texas senator loyd bentsen ran for the democratic nomination and won.  he picks young governor bill clinton as his running mate.

bob dole wins the republican nomination, and in a surprsing move, he nominates long time moderate rhode island senator john chafee as his running mate.

bentsen/clinton: 53%, 299 EVs
dole/chafee: 47%, 239 EVs

I don't see Bensen winning.  After the Reagan years no Democratic could have won.

The only way he would have killed Bush is if he literally had his mob ties kill Bush.

Cuomo was always smart enough to know that he had no chance in an election which took place outside New York.  He might have done well in some early primaries, but he would have been doomed once the media/his rivlas dug into his connections.

Bentsen could win...the problem for the Democrats was that they nominated Dukakis.

Then why did Dukakis lead Bush 53-38% at midsummer?
