condidring they both started the 20th century as isolated monarchies (and both escaped being absorbed by neighbours like Tibet and Sikkim) but Nepal has had a rather volatile history, which Bhutan seems to lack.

Bhutan also ended the 20th century as an isolated country, and still is. They didn't allow television or phones until sometime in the 2000's I believe. And they still keep themselves abnormally isolated.

Bhutan did have it's fair share of upheavals--the late 80s and 90s were when a lot of the pogroms against Lhotshampas happened.

The bhutaneese king, wasn't an absolute fyck wit. They didn't have a royal massacare either, or a significant politcal upheaval from maoists in where the king, the police decided to be despotic, interrogate/sometimes torture, rape random people in villages, which severely shook faith in the king, the government and resulted in the maoists gaining more power, but also increasing power for the moderate opposition, allowing it to be more radical, in their support for a democratic republic, whether it was done to counter the increasing power of the maoists, or of strong opposition to the conservatism, traditionalism, and authoritarianism of the king. .
