I'll never understand why some American races have people running unopposed. If you look at say the UK, they have all of their districts (minus the one for the speaker and the 18 Northern Irish seats) with at least 1 Labour, 1 tory and 1 lib dem candidate. And they have more districts than the US (650 for the House of Commons compared to 435 for the US House of reps)

Now, the US are a larger country so it's more expensive (then again the Democrats and Republicans are larger than Labour/Conservatives). But still, how hard is it to get "just some dude (D)" or "Literally anyone (R)" on the ballot?

Even if they run no campaign, at least giving the option to vote for someone else should good enough

That's why I said that I would file to run for TN-5 if I were 25.  I imagine that, without doing anything, I could probably get 30% of the vote by virtue of having a R next to my name.  If Cooper were to have some big scandal, then I would be an insurance policy.  But, unfortunately, it's not 2021 yet.

Whereas if you worked hard to introduce yourself to voters, you would likely get under 20%.
