And it wasn't just a slip of the tongue:

Apparently the US has withdrawn its recognition of Macedonia. A shame, really. The one Macedonian I've met was extremely nice. What the heck is his endgame here?

I mean, they are appropriating Greek culture by being called that, after all.

A lot of the slavic people who live in the Balkans are pretty paranoid about "Greater Albania", so any attempt to attach ethnic Albanians in Macedonia to Albania would have... ramifications in places like Kosovo and Montenegro.

Back in 2001, the NATO intervention in breaking up Albanian-Slavic violence in Albania is generally seen as one of the more succesful examples of a foreign intervention.

I'm just surprised he supports the independence of Kosovo; the pro-Russian types tend to take the Serbian side in that argument.

And rightly so. He's doing it wrong.

Anyway, this is pretty embarrassing and the last thing Macedonians need given the political crisis in that country.

I happen to intern for a group representing Southeastern European nations in DC (Turkey, Bosnia, Macedonia, etc.) and this comment was a HUGE Deal.

Many (even most) people in the region I've talked to think that border changes would start a snowball effect in the area that would get out of control--not necessarily at the same level as the 1990s but still bad.

Also I find it amazing that the GOP leadership in the House made Rohrabacher the subcommittee chairman when his views are so outside the FP mainstream (and he was given the chair in 2013!)

Hopefully they will also recognise that Belgium isn't a real country and belongs to the Netherlands. France can have their royal family and Wallonia though.

Wow. First Putin and now Greek internet trolls are getting deep into the Republican Party. Very impressive form of entryism this.

I would still give it to Italy: for the sake of Liechtenstein!

A lot of countries have laws like this but they are basically unenforceable I think. If you have Israeli and French citizenship, you just use two passports and don't bring it up to the French government?

Actually, if a country wants to enforce it, it enforces. Not perfectly, of course (which law is perfectly enforceable?) but it is doable. If you are caught, you can lose your citizenship - and with troublesome consequences for your past. So, citizens of countries in which such laws are typically enforced tend to follow them.

But I think both of us are in a wrong thread Smiley

This is crazy. I mean, I never would have expected Macedonia of all places to be brought up. It sounds so much like satire I can hardly believe it.

There is also a thing with some other republican congressmen accusing the former ambassador of trying to get leftists+islamists into power in Macedonia. Which means VMRO has also bought a few members of congress.

Somewhere Alexander the Great is crying. Tongue

He had nothing to do with the modern Slavic country of Macedonia.
