And for the unfamiliar this is basically early alternative rock so named because it was heavily played on college radio stations.

I prefer British indiepop of the same period, but definite freedom genre (one more R.E.M. fan checking in).

For me, right next to traditional country and roots rock. Of course, 'college rock'/folk rock have some similarities to especially roots rock.
