Marco Rubio would absolutely not have a 72% approval rating with political, cultural, and social polarization this high. And he would certainly not win Minnesota and Jersey either.

And yet Bush already had a 90 % job approval rating and maintained it above 80 % for months.

A) The country was less polarized then
B) Rubio hasn't had a 9/11 style event to drive his approvals so high

Rubio doesn't need a 9/11 style event to have high Approvals. He has bipartisan support across the aisle from Republicans & Democrats in Congress which GWB never had because most people even Lawmakers in Washington believed that he wasn't rightfully elected President. The SCOTUS elected him and not the Voters.
Rubio would probably the only President who would have had a chance in real time to get our broken Immigration System back into order, offering people who work in our Country a pathway to Citizenship among other things.

That was because of 9/11. Before then, he was about even.

I do like this story, but the approval ratings have always felt weirdly inflated to me. My guess is that given everything we know, Rubio would be in the low sixties, not the low seventies.

During his speech at the National Civil Rights Museum, where MLK was assassinated, President Rubio even declared « I Have a Dream. And this dream is to see every single American, no matter their race, their religion, their origins and their beliefs, to have the same rights and to have a fair chance to live free and prosperous here in America, the hope of the Earth. »

-In the context of the 2018 midterms elections, former CEO of the Kellogg Company and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce under George W. Bush Carlos Gutierrez announced during a rally in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that he will run for Congress in Florida's 23rd Congressional District as a Republican. So he is likely to challenge Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Despite the fact that Florida's 23rd Congressional District is usually a Democratic stronghold, the Republicans see an opportunity there due to the Democratic Party's left wing's dissatisfaction towards Schultz who has been accused several times of pro-establishment bias by scheduling less debates during the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries while she was Chair of the Democratic National Committee and by contacting with Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign in order to derail Bernie Sanders' campaign, which angered hard-core progressive voters, including many Sanders' supporters. The moreover that Schultz' victory margins have been reduced from 62 %-38 % in 2014 to 54 %-44 % in 2016. In addition, Gutierrez' business experience and wide knowledge in economics could help him to attract voters who are selecting the economy as the most important issue at a time of strong economic growth due to the success and effectiveness of the Rubionomics. His Hispanic heritage could help him to attract Hispanic voters, an important electoral group that represents now almost 20 % of Florida's voters and a group that made a great contribution in helping their fellow Hispanic Marco Rubio to get to victory in the 2016 presidential election. Gutierrez can also benefit on the fact that Florida is President Rubio's home state. As a result, Florida's 23rd Congressional District is now rated as a toss-up.

April 20 :
-President Rubio meets with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House where they discussed issues such as the economy, trade, energy, democracy, freedom, human rights in Africa, fight against AIDS, fight against terrorism, etc.

Carlos Gutiérrez does not live in the 23rd district. He's a neighbor of my cousins in the 27th district, two hours south.

Carlos Gutiérrez does not live in the 23rd district. He's a neighbor of my cousins in the 27th district, two hours south.

PS I love this TL

Unless Gutiérrez would have changed residence in this timeline in order to challenge Schultz.

And thank you very much. This is my first timeline and I think it will be my best one ever. Smiley

I wonder who won the Ohio Republican Governor Primary? With Kasich been so strong you would expect that this would bode well for Kasichs Lt. Governor Mary Taylor who could become Ohios 1st Female Governor in November.

Considering how you mention that the missile launch was due to North Korea attempting to do a nuclear attack on islands within U.S. territory, rather than a simple missile test, I personally believe that the United States response would be tougher than sanctions and we would be at the very least on the brink of war with North Korea.

What happened to Josh Mandel in the Ohio senate race?

Let's say that he is selected by Mary Taylor to be her running mate, which means that if Taylor is elected Governor in November, Mandel would become Lieutenant-Governor.

Marco Rubio's Presidency
May 2018, Part 2

May 15 :
-The State Department announces the approval of a $41.5m sale of small arms to Ukraine.

May 16 :
-The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution strongly condemning human rights violations in Russian-annexed Crimea and referring to Russia as an "occupying power" there.

May 17 :
-President Rubio meets with Cameroonian President Paul Biya at the White House where they discussed issues such as economic and trade ties between the two nations, energy, democracy and freedom on the African continent and the fight against terrorism.

May 18 :

-President Rubio starts campaigning for 2018 Republican senatorial candidates. He started in Ohio where he campaigns for Republican senatorial nominee John Kasich. Here are some parts of his speech during his rally in Columbus, Ohio :

Hello, Ohio.

It's a great honor to be here in the great state of Ohio in order to fight for what is right for America. In November, the American people will go to the polls in order to decide the balance of power and America's future depends on it. The question that will be asked to the voters is whether we move backwards in the years of weak economy, of big government and of strong terrorist threat or we keep moving forward through the promotion of free enterprise, of free market, of small government, of energy independence and of a strong foreign policy that helped us to make America safe. That requires expanding our majority in the Congress through the election of a terrific team of conservative Republican lawmakers. That's why I am here to officially announce my endorsement to Governor John Kasich for U.S. Senate.

[Crowd cheers and applauds]

John and I were once rivals when we both ran for the Republican presidential nomination, but we have much more similarities than differences and I'm fully thankful of his endorsement to my presidential candidacy and of his strong efforts and contributions to ensure my election at the presidency of the United States. Thanks to these efforts, we turned the country around. Over the last 2 years. By cutting taxes for all Americans, by promoting oil production, by ending the War on Coal, by encouraging free trade with our allies in Asia, Europe and Latin America, by promoting school choice and by championing small businesses, we made America the best place in the world to do business, we created over 6 million new jobs and brought the unemployment rate at its lowest rate since 1970. And thanks to the adoption of the Rubiocare, we improved our health care system by exempting taxpayers from regulations aimed at bankrupting health insurance companies, thus reinforcing their purchasing power as well as their access to health care services. By reinforcing our security measures, by increasing our defense budget, by strengthening and expanding our alliances and by striking terrorists wherever they are, we made strong progress against radical Islamic terrorism, we eradicated ISIS in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen and our courageous soldiers killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. By reinforcing our military presence in the Pacific Ocean, by increasing sanctions against North Korea and its international financial firms and by creating the Pacific Treaty Organization, we took the advantage against North Korea. By standing with our allies in Europe and by providing them all the necessary material and military support, we took advantage against Russia in Eastern Europe.

But Governor Kasich's opponent, Senator Sherrod Brown, is running on the wrong ideas. He has a record of voting to increase taxes on hard working families and and businesses. He voted against the Small Business Tax Fairness Act of 2000 that reduced taxes on small business and increased the minimum wage while we all know that most of the jobs created come from small businesses. He voted over 35 times in favor of raising taxes on Social Security, on small businesses and on hard working families, including middle class families. He voted for Medicare taxes on seniors citizens. In 2012, Senator Brown voted against the JOBS Act that cut regulatory burdens on small and medium-sized businesses making it easier for them to raise capital and create jobs. Even after 9/11, the worst attack that was orchestrated against our country, Sherrod Brown voted against voted against establishing the Department of Homeland Security, a measure that reinforced our national security and prevented further terrorist attacks against us. While we all know that Iran is using the revenues from the lifting of the sanctions to develop nuclear weapons and to sponsor, fund and arm terrorist groups around the world, Sherrod Brown voted NO on describing the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group even though the Quds Force, a special forces unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, is arming the Taliban, the same radical Islamic terrorists that gave refuge to Osama Bin Laden, the perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks, in Afghanistan.

[Crowd boos]

But Governor Kasich has all the experience needed to make sure our country will keep moving forward. Before his time as Governor, Ted Strickland's big government policies that increased taxes, encouraged the War on Coal and restricted trade cost Ohio 350 000 jobs, placed Ohio as 48th state in terms of job creation and increased the unemployment rate. But when John Kasich became Governor, he brought this state back on track by cutting taxes by billions for all Ohioans and by eliminating income taxes for small-business owners, which made Ohio a stronger business-friendly environment and encouraged job creation through free enterprise and free market, which brought Ohio's unemployment rate from 10.3 % in 2010 to 4 % this year in 2018. And he balanced the budget not only once but twice. He served as a member of the House Armed Services Committee for 18 years so he knows what it takes to keep America safe.

By reinforcing our majority in the Senate through the election of John Kasich as your senator, we will keep moving America forward and ensure the adoption of bills and laws that will grow the economy and create jobs and give all the necessary efforts to defeat radical Islamic terrorism and to keep America free and safe. So Ohio, I call on you to mobilize, to go to the polls and elect John Kasich to the U.S. Senate.

Thank you. God bless Ohio and God bless the United States of America.

[Crowd cheers and applauds]

May 19 :

-After the borders are secured and reinforced since last December, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake (R) and California Senator Kamala Harris (D) teamed together, in an effort to reform America's broken immigration system, to introduce the Opportunity Act that would give access to American citizenship for immigrants if they pay fines and demonstrate an understanding of English; prohibit a registered provisional immigrant from becoming a lawful permanent resident until after the Secretary of State has certified the availability of visas for all petitions filed and approved before the enactment of this bill, authorize a registered provisional immigrant to receive a social security number, and to enlist in the Armed Forces; establish a US-VISIT System; establish merit-based system for future visa allocation taking into account education, employment experience, eligibility for a high demand occupation, relation to current citizens, and English language proficiency; establish the nonimmigrant agricultural visa program for immigrants residing in foreign countries who come to the United States for a temporary period to work in the agriculture industry and require the Secretary of Homeland Security to establish additional border patrol stations and forward operating bases in the Southwest border region. The Senate will vote on that bill on May 25 and the House on May 30 should the bill pass the Senate.

May 21 :
-President Rubio hosts Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel at the White House where they discussed issues such as economic and trade ties between the United States and Belgium, defense ties, counter-terrorism, democracy, freedom of religion, Syria, Russia, etc.

Marco Rubio's Presidency
May 2018, Part 3

May 22 :

-During the referendum on the 9th Article on Japan's Constitution, Japanese voters voted in favor of a modification of this consitutional article that prohibited Japan from using the military force during seven decades. The YES option received 55 % of the vote while the NO option obtained 45 % of the vote. As a result, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe obtained the mandate to modify the 9th Article on Japan's Constitution, thus allowing Japan to militarize itself in the context of North Korea's nuclear threat. Abe declares the results of the referendum as a victory for Japan and for international stability, security and peace.

-President Rubio speaks with Shinzo Abe on the phone and congratulated him for the victory of the YES option that will modify the 9th Article of Japan's Constitution and allow Japan to militarize itself. At the same occasion, the two leaders declared that these results will increase pressure on North Korea, reinforce efforts to fight terrorism in the Asia-Pacific region (including Abu Sayyaf), ensure territorial integrity in the region and restore stability and peace in the Pacific Ocean.

May 24 :
-After receiving guarantees such as the establishment of a US-VISIT System as well as additional border patrol stations and forward operating bases in the Southwest border region, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions announces that he will support the Opportunity Act after years of skepticism on immigration reform.

May 25 :
-The Senate votes 69-30 for the Opportunity Act that would grant immigration reform. The bill has now yet to pass the House of Representatives on May 30.

May 27 :
-President Rubio meets with Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili at the White House where they discussed issues such as economy, trade, energy, democracy, counter-terrorism and Russia.

May 28 :

-President Rubio, his family and his Cabinet celebrate his 47th birthday at the White House.

May 30 :

-The House of Representatives votes 277-156 for the Opportunity Act to reform America's immigration system. The bill is signed into law by President Rubio, thus reforming America's immigration system and ensuring the American citizenship for immigrants across the nation.

May 31 :
-President Rubio hosts Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House where they discussed issues like economic and trade ties between the two countries, energy, democracy, defense ties, North Korea, China and counter-terrorism. Later, during their bilateral joint press conference, the President of the United States praised Japan's decision to militarize itself after the referendum on the 9th Article of the Japanese Constitution and declared that « this is a great step towards our victory against North Korea and Abu Sayyaf, towards the respect of the Asia-Pacific region's territorial integrity as well as stability and peace in the Pacific. »
