Glad to see a serious Democrat running here. Even if the odds are against Democrats in Tennessee, it's nice to have someone willing to mount a serious campaign.

This is probably as good of a get as Dems can get here.

Now to see if they can get the Ol' Indian Outlaw to jump in for Senate... I won't hold my breath

Huh

Tim McGraw.

Who's first big hit is the idiotic but supremely catchy "Indian Outlaw."

I saw him in concert in Spokane about 18 months ago, as a sidenote. I've never been in proximity to that concentration of testorone in my life, and I played football and was in a fraternity. Also, the stereotypes about female behavior at concerts is 100% true

I think there might be something like that about country music concerts, haha.

Re: masculinity and testosterone: a lot of people close to me were shocked to learn that I voted for Clinton given my redneck-ish tendencies, and like you, was big into football and baseball in high school and a fraternity at Mizzou (but not at Cornell). Though a lot of my old fraternity brothers who were otherwise pretty Republican voted for Clinton or Johnson, too, so I guess I'm not too big of an outlier.

What frat were you in? I was a Theta Chi for my freshman year, dropped the frat afterwards

I actually think Dems chances are better in OK, KS, AL because Republicans have mismanaged those states financially, voters are feeling the pain and some marginal R voters may be fed up with it. While TN is in decent financial shape and Haslam and TN Rs haven't gutted education so little urge for voters to throw out Rs.

However, it's worth remembering that at the end of 2010, Democrats did have the Governorship and a majority of the US House seats. Maybe there's still a little bit of swing left there.

Looking at last presidential results that seems unlikely... But we will see...

Weren't you the one insisting that Hogan was fine because he was a different Republican?

How is Karl Dean a "different kind of Democrat"?

Tim McGraw can't beat Corker (or Haslam if Corker steps aside), no way. Senate races are way too partisan these days.

Probably not... but that'd be one hell of a campaign

Tim McGraw running for office was always about a theoretical Gubernatorial campaign anyway, right?

I had heard it's either that or TN-05.

Obama's gone, so that might allow a small Democratic resurgence in TN at local and state levels.

State Sen. Mark Green (R-Clarksville) was thought to be a frontrunner in this race.  I hadn't decided on anybody yet, but I liked him a lot (I once asked him about why we don't have a 20-week abortion ban yet and he said it was because that bill wouldn't completely end abortion, for example).  Anyway, he will do well in his new job, I'm sure.

So, who is the R frontrunner now? Fincher? Black? Blackburn?

Probably Diane Black or Randy Boyd, but a lot can still happen

So I guess Corker's not going to make a move for Governor?

Good, if some whacko like Diane Black wins the nomination and it's a Democratic year then Karl Dean just might be able to win with a little luck.

He will need a lot of luck, not "a little".....

It's a figure of speech Tongue  And Dean is a strong enough candidate to win in a good Democratic year against a weak Republican.  It's an uphill climb for sure, but far from impossible.

I don't see him having the necessary crossover appeal in East Tennessee, or even rural and small town central and West TN, for that matter. This isn't Louisiana and the state isn't in bad shape. Safe R, barring some unforeseen circumstances.
Agreed. Although I could see him performing over 40%.

I don't know anything about Boyd's politics, but I've heard genuinely good things about him as a person so if there has to be a Republican Governor I hope it's him.

If the Republicans have to win, Randy McNally or Bob Corker would be ideal.

I wonder if Mike McWherter would run...

Boyd is a close Haslam ally and would likely be similar

Tennessee seems well run, so that sounds good to me

Considering it's Tennessee, that sounds OK.

(Not that I have anything against the state, except politically.)
