I support this bill. The way our educational system has relegated indigenous peoples to the back burner of history simply because Europeans triumphed in massacring them is wretched. I believe we owe it to the native folks of this land to honor their memories and historical contributions.

I don't care much for honoring Christopher Columbus (who wasn't even the first European to arrive in America), but this also strikes me as pointless. My preference would be no holiday and a proper amount of attention to Native Americans in the curriculum, though that would be a longer bill.

Indeed, I prefer getting rid of the holiday completely and making Election day(s) a federal holiday instead.

I would be in favor of an Indigenous People's Day as well as making Election Day a federal holiday.

I ask that the Senate reject this bill so that we can accomplish the second thing ( actually isn't this something I can just do by executive order???)

I support Indigenous People's Day and also Election Day.  Holidays woo woo ( lol just kidding).  I'm not sure what the problem is with it, but if we don't do the holiday, we should definitely do something with education like PiT said because I think it's a serious problem.  When I took my first US history course in college, I felt like there was so much I didn't know or was hidden from me about our country's history which is pretty sad.  Not just about Native Americans either but it was definitely one of the big things.

Does anyone have anything else to say about this? If not, I think I will draft an amendment along the lines I suggested.

I would like to see a proposal similar to what the President proposed. I could draft an amendment in that vein.

No October holiday and Election Day as a holiday instead? I could get behind that as an amendment.

Sure. I'll try drafting something up tonight, but I'm pretty busy for most of the day. It'll definitely get done by tomorrow, though.

Shouldn't that be a separate bill then? That would make a lot more sense...

Citizens are hereby granted the right to miss up to 4 (four) hours of a work day in order to vote.

Are we letting NPCs vote Shocked

Or is this a permission slip to give to our real-life bosses? Tongue

What do we mean by "all dates where federal elections are held?"  Does that include special elections and runoffs like Louisiana has for its congressional elections?  If so, how would that work?  It wouldn't make sense to have a federal holiday for an election that's only happening in one state or one region.

Edit: Just realized I should be talking in Atlasian terms, ugh.  lol.  But point still stands regarding special elections and runoffs.  And do Senate elections count?  We could end up with a lot of holidays.

I suppose we could specify that the holidays would only apply for when the Federal election booth would be open, which is usually for Presidential elections.
