The bulk of ObamaCare was passed under normal legislative rules in December 2009, before Brown was elected, on a party line 60 to 39 vote. The reconciliation bill was composed of fairly minor amendments and passed by a narrower margin (several conservadems voted against it).

Okay, believe that single payer wouldn't be like the veterans hospitals, or that its wait times wouldn't mirror the unconsciable wait times that exist in the UK. Just don't come crying to me when you realize your beliefs are incorrect.

The reconciliation bill could have been much more major. And LOL at the idea that no one ever waits for healthcare in the US.

They wait far less than they would under single payer

Do yo have, like, evidence for this bald assertion?

93.4% of people in the emergency room in the UK are completed treated within 4 hours. That's certainly not true in the US.

US-UK analogy is not fair as most hospitals in UK are government operated. US will have a single payer (if it has) similar to Canada where the medical services are given largely by private agencies but paid for by government, one public insurance for everyone.

Anyways Bernie Sanders won't introduce Medicare-for-all Single payer till Obamacare debate concludes.

“We are going to introduce it literally as soon as we’re through with this debate. I don’t want to confuse the two issues,” Sanders told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Longer term, we need a Medicare for all,” Sanders told host Jake Tapper.

So apparently this is their backup plan. I thought they were supposed to be fiscally responsible.

But this wouldn't fit under reconciliation, right?

But this wouldn't fit under reconciliation, right?

The measure is to defund the IRS's efforts to enforce the mandate, which is certainly something that is covered by reconciliation. It's like what they did for medical marijuana - they aren't changing the rule per say, they are just starving the agencies in question of money to enforce it.

I'm not sure how this would play out, though. Most likely scenario is that over the next few years, people slowly begin to take advantage of the fact that they are no longer being forced to buy insurance, even if the rule is still on the books.

What Republicans are doing with this whole healthcare issue is incredibly reckless. Shameful even. They can't get the votes to repeal PPACA, so they'd rather sabotage it instead, industry & country be damned.

Time may be running out for Republicans in the Senate as well. They are currently on a week long holiday for July the 4th, and won't be back until July 10th. They will also then be on their summer vacation starting on the 28th of July until early September. That only gives them 18 days to try to hammer out a deal. There is supposed to be a big nasty fight over the budget and debt limit in September that will occupy their time as well. Each month closer to the 2018 election Republicans keep their disastrous health care plan alive, the more people will remember in November 2018.

FWIW, Ben Sasse has been suggesting that the August Recess could be canceled if a health care bill doesn't pass congress in July.

There is 0 chance McConnell cancels August recess. 0. None.

What makes you so convinced? I doubt most Rs would care, I don't think they enjoy getting yelled at at town halls.

At this point, I'm increasingly thinking that this debacle ends with no legislation.

Sen. Flake comes out in FAVOR of the Cruz amendment. Theory: he knows it won't pass, but can use this to defend himself in the upcoming Republican primary.

Flake may be giving a giant F U to the bill and Trump here by advancing the Cruz amendment, which he knows Capito, Heller, and Collins hate.

actually Flake is my sleeper pick to have problems in both primary and general. He won AZ by just 5 points in the 2012 election despite Romney winning Arizona by 10. This was for a GOP held seat and it was an open seat but still. Flake had been a House member. So actually I think Jeffry has more problems than just a primary. He's probably facing in the midterms the same type of electorate that he faced in 2012 (where he didn't clear a majority of the electorate, by the way).

He can / will probably win but I am also saying it might be close in both.

Manu Raju‏ @mkraju
Asked a senior Senate Republican the chances health care bill will pass. "Better than 1 percent. Not yet above 2 percent in my opinion."

Dont worry...they'll all fold one by one. The GOP has no ethics, principles, or morals. The majority of the party is propped up by monied interests and their going to do as their told to keep getting their money.

Flake was a big never-Trumper and then he folded after Trump ended up winning. Dont't expect any courage from any Republicans. It's all a kabuki theater shell game

Give it a rest.

Personally, I am open to a bipartisan approach. It probably won't be anything I would like in the end, though.
