I must say that I was really thinking that some version of ObamaCare repeal would pass, as this is a republican caucus who approved DeVos, who is objectively and extremely unqualified for her position. Based on that, they should be lapdogs for Trump.  But they have decided not to be, and that is very admirable.

I tried to warn you guys, when I said (several times actually) that "personnel isn't policy":

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=259738.msg5545889#msg5545889

The Senate rarely blocks a Cabinet appointment from a president of the same party that controls the Senate.  (And even in Trump's case, they did torpedo Puzder before a vote could even be held, so it's not like they were 100% on board with all his Cabinet picks.)  But that doesn't mean they're going to support him on every policy.

As I also said in that thread:

Why does it seem like people are vacillating back and forth between "Congressional Republicans are lap dogs who'll vote with Trump no matter what" and "Trump won't be able to get anything passed through Congress"?

Perhaps moot at this point, but a new NBC poll of support for Trumpcare in 439 "Trump counties" in 16 states — Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin — that either flipped from President Barack Obama to Trump, or where Trump greatly outpaced Mitt Romney's performance in 2012.

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/nbc-news-wsj-poll-just-12-key-trump-counties-back-n784131

Overall:

Good idea 12%
Bad idea 41%
No opinion/Unsure 47%

Trump voters: 25/16/59
Clinton voters: 0/75/26  (yes, that's a zero)

Trump voters: 25/16/59
Clinton voters: 0/75/26  (yes, that's a zero)

And the majority of Trump voters is totally clueless... well, not exactly clueless. Deep down they know it's a bad bill, but they won't say so because their Leader supports it. Hence they have "no opinion". Those sheep.

Portman is officially a NO on the MTP for repeal. That brings the current whip (counting unknowns as Yes) to 47-52 if McCain is still missing.

What we need now is a president who's a dealmaker.

Too bad that such ones aren't in stock in the White House right now.

Interesting, that adds up to 101 percent, which could only have been possible if it's exactly 0, 74½ and 25½ percent and they rounded both halves up. It also likely means they didn't do any weighting.

Would there be any value in Democrats voting Yes on the MTP to force a vote on the actual thing, with the idea being that a bill officially voted down is more "dead" than one that just had an MTP fail, or more likely, pulled?

Or would that backfire spectacularly?

What the MTP passing would do is launch an open amendment process, through which a deal republicans like enough could possibly be reached. Too risky.

That would most certainly backfire spectacularly.

^ That should act as an important trial of Paul Ryan's theory: That while the caucus may say this or that before the vote, they will vote yes when they are forced to actually vote.

I believe any changes to the way people said they would vote occurred only after changes had been made to the bill. McConnell supposedly isn't going to make any more changes, and there are already enough public commitments to kill this bill.

Trump will serve himself a double helping of dessert to prove what a great deal-maker he is.

It's so encouraging to see all these nice Maverick moderates step forward in the GOP caucus now that their votes don't matter. Of course the average voter ability to understand or care that they held out possibly backing Uncle Mitch to take away the Healthcare of 20 + million Americans until it was a fait accompli, so yeah they'll probably skate by until they get another chance to strip health care benefits.

Trump may have just directed a thinly veiled threat at Heller.

He hates both Heller and Flake and talked about personally donating $10M to Flake's primary challenger, was just reading this https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-07-17/jeff-flake-becomes-trump-s-big-2018-gamble

Trump is a dumbass who cant do anything but dish out threats and insults...hence why he's a lousy leader

Trump is not a leader; he's a boss.  The problem is that bossing won't get his way in government like it does in his businesses.

No he doesn't. He firmly believes that disapproval ratings are fake news and bad polling. Seriously.

At least he's not on board with just a flat-out repeal.

But they should move to tax reform now.
