BREAKING NEWS: US and their allies attack Afghanistan

News Reporter: The United States along side with their allies struck Afghanistan midnight (Afghanistan Time) beginning the first stages of their retaliation against the terrorists who committed the worst terrorist attack in American history.  In their airstrikes they were able to destroy many communication towers used by the Taliban and also were able to hit some of the training camps used by Al Queda. Now for a statement by Defense Secretary Sam Nunn

Nunn: Today we were successfully able to destroy much of the Taliban communication systems, and much of Al-Queda ability to train new terrorists. The first stage of our planned invasion of Afghanistan is quickly coming to a successful conclusion , and we are close to beginning are 2nd step when we invade Afghanistan with our ground troops .

Ground Troops move into Afghanistan :

News Reporter: Its been reported that the Alliance troops have begun their ground invasion of Afghanistan and currently it looks like that Kabul could fall soon. Its been 3 weeks since the US and their allies began bombing Afghanistan and it looks like just like in the gulf war that initial phase has helped make the ground war much easier.

Breaking News : Kabul falls

Tom Brokaw: We come to you with breaking news today , Kabul the capital of Afghanistan and a city controlled by the Taliban for over 5 years has now fallen to allied forces who now have fully taken control of the city .

NBC Military correspondent : The Taliban now it looks like has given up trying to fight off the Invasion and is in full retreat mode, along with Al Queda. The fall of Kabul along much of the Taliban's and Al -Qaeda's resources and infrastructure begin destroyed means that the US has likely already accomplished their goals for the invasion phase, but now must also try to capture Bin-Laden and other top ranking members of Al-Qaeda to get justice for the 9/11 attacks.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich attacks President Clinton:

Gingrich: I'm getting really tired over Washington, and the media fawning over the President despite the fact that on his watch we had the deadliest day on US soil since the Civil War happened on his watch. The fact is he had 8 years to build a strong counter terrorism force, get Osama Bin Laden, and the events of September 11th show that he has failed.  The fact is President Clinton should get nothing but condensations from Washington and the media   , yet now members of our own party have been fawning over it. You guys should be ashamed in letting Mr. Clinton get away with the worst failure this country has had in a long time , and doing nothing but carrying the ball for him.

Interviewer: But donest Clinton get credit for defeating the Taliban

Gingrich: Is that a joke, the Taliban has an even weaker army then Iraq did in 1991 so the outcome was already known. The fact is again you guys are giving credit to President Clinton in areas he doesnt deserve any credit for, and the only way he should get credit is if he accomplishes these two things: The first to destroy Bin Laden and other top members Al-Qaeda, and to turn Afghanistan into a place where it can stop groups like the Tailiban from rising again.

Top Republicans Condemn their Former Speaker for his comments:

John McCain: The fact that the former Speaker is using this tragedy to further his political interests his disgusting , and he should apologize for this behavior now. The fact that the former speaker continues to put his political interests ahead of the country proves why we did the right thing when we kicked him out of the Speaker position .

Bush family joint statement : Speaker Gingrich should be ashamed of his behavior and should apologize now. Speaker Gingrich should not attack a president like this in a time of war

House Minority Leader Armey: Im Disappointing in our former speaker and my friend for making these comments and I believe he should apologize as these are the wrong comments to make in a time like this.

It may be a bit late to ask, but did any other president run for a third term post-22nd amendment failing, and did any win?

nvm, just looked back to one of the older posts to see if any others won. Would've liked to see Reagan get 3 terms. My first question still stands tho.

Reagan and Eisenhower were too old and their health was declining so they didn't run . The rest didnt even complete two full terms so that rules them out as well.

Congress passes Homeland Security Act and Tools to stop Terrorism Act and President Signs it

What Homeland Security Act does:

1. Creates a cabinet level department named the Department of Homeland Security
2. Reorganizes many departments which deal with protecting the homeland security of the United States  into one unified and integrated Department.

Tools to Stop Terrorism Act:

Summary of Law: http://www.olcu.org/PDFs/USPatriotAct_Summary.pdf

President Clinton: I want to thank members of congress over the past week for coming together in a bipartisan manner to pass legislation which will help our country be safer. Starting from today , no longer will departments charged with protecting our homeland security have to go to the various bureaucratic structures of navigating to different large departments to pass on critical information to other departments ,because from now on they will all be part of the same department . Also no longer will our intelligence agencies be denied the tools need to stop terrorism , as with this bill Im going to sign it will give them the tools needed to stop future terrorist attacks as well as intercept and arrest any person who tries to fund them. Clinton signs Bill

Breaking News: Bin Laden Killed in raid at Tora Bora and other Al-Queda leaders captured in Kabul

David Gregory: The President and the Secretary of Defense have some major news to announce , so lets head there

Secretary of Defense Nunn: With great pleasure we can announce that our raid to take down Osama Bin Laden has been successful , as a few hours ago we got confirmation that Bin Laden was killed in the raid. We also can report that we have also captured another top leader of Al-Queda named Abu Musab al-Zarqawi while he was trying to flee the country. He has been arrested and will face justice here in the United States for his crimes against out country.

Media: Mr.President , Does this mean our war is over

President Clinton: No it does not mean that, it just means a phase of the war has come to an end. Now our goal will be to make sure Afghanistan will no longer be a safe haven for terrorists in the future. This phase make take time to finish , but we must make sure that we do not leave until its completed as if we leave without finishing the job, we risk allowing another terrorist group to find safe haven here. I want to end by thanking our troops and the troops of our allies for their bravery to fight for justice and freedom .

Biden announces charges against Al Zarqawi

Biden: The Department of Justice after much deliberation has come to the conclusion  that we will charge Abu Musab al-Zarqawi of Aiding and Abetting Terrorists , 2 charges of attempted murder , and conspiracy to hijack planes for the use of terrorism . The names of those soldiers who Zarqawi tried to kill will not be revealed to the public so we can guarantee the safety of those two soldiers.

Media: Will  the DOJ pursue the death penalty

Biden: Yes the DOJ will pursue the death penalty , as we feel thats the best way for justice to be carried out. Lastly the DOJ has decided the trial of Zarqawi and any future Al-Queda leaders we capture will not be permitted to be broadcasted on live tv.

Biden leaves

Bill Clinton sits down for interview with Peter Jennings :

Jennings : Today I have the high honor to interview President Bill Clinton . So I along with ABC want to thank President Clinton for the honor.

Clinton: I also want to thank you for coming here

Jennings: Since that terrible tragedy on September 11th , we have seen our country come together in ways we havent in a very long time. We have also seen much act of bipartisanship in congress over the past few months, as they together have passed bills to make sure something like what happened on September 11th never happens again. So Mr. President are you surprised by this given the fact that the past 10 years in fact have been very divisive .

Clinton: I am not surprised at all at the fact that our country has come together , and we have seen politicians from both sides put politics away to do whats best for our country. Its in the great spirit of America , that despite all our differences on the issues, when we face crises we put politics aside and come together to not only stop the crises but make sure it never happens again. For example during the Depression and World War Two our country put our differences aside to stop the depression and end the war , and I fell they are doing it again today.

Jennings: Now to move down to the laws itself , can you explain how the Department of Homeland Security will change things in the future

Clinton : The biggest change is that many departments which were tasked with defending our homeland will now be under the same umbrella , which means they can pass critical  information around to each of the agencies much easier than before, as before they had to go through multiple bureaucracies to get that info through now that no longer will happen. Due to that it will significantly quicken our country's ability to stop and intercept terrorism.

Jennings: Wouldnt people say though that its better to streamline things instead of creating anew department.

Clinton: No because the bureaucracies are needed to make sure the information do not end up in the wrong department hands , and that is still needed so what we did instead is create a new department which will oversee the agencies what are tasked to defending our homeland .

Jennings: Moving on to Afghanistan , the Taliban has been defeated, Bin Laden is dead, and many top Al-Qaeda leaders have been arrested, so what is our mission now.

Clinton: Our mission is to rebuild Afghanistan so groups like the Taliban can never rise to power again. For example after World War Two we decided to rebuild Japan and Germany , and due to that we have never had to fight another war with those countries ever again.

Jennings: If you remember we were actively in Germany for 45 years.

Clinton: Yes we were, but that was because of the fact that we were there to protect West Germany from a Soviet Invasion , not there to keep order or stability . In fact after WW1 instead of rebuilding out enemies countries we destroyed it even more, and due to that Germany rose again and we had to fight a significantly worse war 20 years later. We do not want to repeat those same mistakes, so instead we are following President Truman's model of the Marshall Plan.

Jennings: I want to thank you for the interview , we had a nice time today

Clinton: Always good talking to you

Unemployment numbers and other economic indicators for Dec 2001 , show economy still worsening :

Unemployment went up from 5.4% to 5.6% in December 2001, and today the Dow Jones fell below 10,000 for the first time in nearly 3 years. The current economic recession was caused by the burst of the Internet Bubble beginning in mid of 2000, and got worse by the September 11th attacks last year. The President of the United States plans to speak about this at his state of the union address which will take place later this year.

2002 Clinton's State of Union Address

Clinton: Members of Congress, and the American People , 4 and a half months ago our country was attacked by terrorists in an evil and dastardly way in the hopes of dividing us further and to make us surrender . In the past 4 and a half months we have proven them wrong, as the state of our union is strong (Applause) . We have come together to pass counter terrorism laws , one of them reorganizes our various agencies which have to protect our homeland security under one umbrella and then giving those individual more tools to deal with terrorism(Applause). The heads of the agencies have already reported that they are finding it easier to protect our homeland then before(Applause).Despite us passing these laws meant to combat terrorism , our security wouldnt have improved without the fabulous job our troops have done in Afghanistan.

The terrorists also hoped to make us surrender , but thanks to the heroism and sacrifice of our troops not only have we not surrendered but we are on the precipice of totally defeating our enemy in Afghanistan (Long Standing Ovation). Al Qaeda , the evil group who attacked us on September 11th and who is responsible for many terrorist attacks all around the world is close to defeat because we have destroyed most of their training camps in Afghanistan ,  killed Bin Laden who was their top leader, captured their other leader , and the government who harbored them is no longer in power(Long Standing Ovation). Now our goal must be to rebuild Afghanistan to make sure groups like the Taliban cant rise again  (Applause). I want to remind people that the reason Japan and Germany are our friends now, is that President Truman after World War Two decided to rebuild their countries , as he knew that was the best way to make them our friends(Applause). It will be hard work but I promise you that our country will be just a successful now , as we were back then (Applause).

While Afghanistan is no longer a threat , their are other countries in that region who do pose a threat . One of them is Iraq , whose leader Suddam Hussein continues to go against the International Community and refuses to honor his surrender agreement as he continues to refuse the weapons inspectors back in his country. I want to tell Suddam that if you think you can use this as an opportunity to negotiate favorable terms to your self you are mistaken(Standing Ovation) as we did once negotiate terms with you and that was back after your defeat in the Gulf War. Just like someone who is on parole must stick to the conditions he has been paroled by you must stick to the conditions at the end of the Gulf War, or we will take you out(Standing Ovation). Other threats in the nation include Libya and Syria who's leaders continue to try to build weapons of mass destruction and all I have to say is if you want them , we have these demands  : 1 . Give your people more freedom , 2. Making your country more democratic , 3. Renounce all your past affiliations with terrorism and join us in the fight against them, 4. Apologize to our country and others for those past affiliations (Standing Ovation ) .If you dont follow our demands,  we will make it our mission to stop you from getting those weapons as , they present a danger to world peace(Applause).

Now while terrorism threatens our country , so can a recession . The first thing I believe will stimulate the economy is the middle and lower tax cuts we passed last year, as a stronger middle class means a stronger economy(Standing Ovation). We also must also build new infrastructure , which not only creates new jobs but what expands the access of the world wide web to everyone in America(Applause). The internet in the future will take a major role in how well our economy performs , so if we can expand the internet to more people our economy will do better than if less people have the internet (Applause ). Lastly I'm proposing a 30 billion dollar stimulus package to jump start the economy, as that 30 billion dollars will result in a multiplier affect which will eventually take us back to the prosperity of the late 1990s(Half Applause ) .

The last issue I want to discuss is healthcare reform , as that is the issue which is most important to our seniors. Today the prices of prescription drugs has become so expensive compared to the time medicare was created that seniors no longer can afford medicine which in my opinion is unacceptable (Applause ). So I am proposing a bill which will cover prescription drugs under Medicare so our seniors can have the money to do things they want to do(Applause ). These things including spending time with their grand kids, have a good retirement which they deserve after working hard for so many decades(Applause ). People ask how we can pay for it , and the way I believe we can pay for it is to increase the cap on pay roll taxes (half Applause). To the people who oppose it, Im willing to support a 5% further income tax cut for all Americans if you support this plan (Applause).God Bless you and May God Bless America

Senator John McCain of Arizona response to the President's State of the Union:

McCain: Good evening , today I want to speak about the issues that I believe will make our country better. First I want to thank President Clinton, for showing leadership by putting aside partisan differences and working with both Republicans and Democrats alike to ensure our country's safety . The president tonight spoke about the successes our country had had so far in Afghanistan,  and the fact that we need to stay to make sure Afghanistan doesnt become safe haven for terrorism again. I totally agree with the President on the fact that we need to stay, but I am worried about the fact that the President didnt outline the goals of this new phase . The reason I am worried is , if we just stay in Afghanistan for a police action , the Afghan people will believe we are there to occupy their country and try to fight back. In my opinion , we need to be there with the goal of making Afghanistan a Democratic Republic and make sure the Afghans them selves can fight terrorism without outside help. To do that we need to build schools and infrastructure which can give their people a future so they can move their country out of the tribal attitudes of the medieval ages, and at the same time we need to help the Afghans build up an army and a police force so they can fight extremist forces by themselves. On other threats such as Iraq, Syria and Libya the President is correct but it is time that he backs up the words with action as thats the only way they will mean anything.

The president also talked about how he believes new innovation will spur our economy. He is totally correct on the basic picture again, but wrong on the ways we can get to that result. The best way we can encourage innovation is not through , more government spending and regulation but by cutting the red tape which stops innovation . What I propose is , that the President should remove regulations that make the internet less accessible to the people, and at the same time should promise tax breaks to companies who keep trying to create new innovations. Also I believe we need to pass campaign finance reform , as  established companies use today's laws to get the government at both state and federal level to pass laws that push possible new competitors out which in the end stifle innovation. Lastly the President spoke about how to reform medicare so it pays for medicine , but he has been talking about that for 4 years now and until the President makes a concentrated effort to work with both Republicans and Democrats on this issue , we wont solve the problem. National Security issues arent the only issues where we must be bipartisan , we must be bipartisan on domestic issues as well as thats the only we can solve America's economic and healthcare issues. I want to thank you for staying around to listen to my rebuttal, and may god bless you and may god bless America.
