There's nothing saying that Donald Trump is planning to run for re-election in 2020, considering that his approval ratings are already in the low 40s.

Not really that surprising.  Though I admit I was wrong at the time, hindsight is 20-20, and it's pretty obvious that a very large segment of the Republican coalition really dislikes Trump but was never seriously not going to vote for him against a Democrat.

Trump would pound any primary challenger into oblivion if someone actually dared to do it. No Republican politician since Reagan has been better at use of rhetoric to drum up the Republican base.
 
But even putting that aside, Cruz's numbers would soon drop due to his unpleasant personality. It'd be over even more quickly if he were stupid enough to choose that vile California woman as his "running mate" again.

Yup.

Trump would dominate the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. In order for a challenger to have a chance, that person would have to do well in Iowa and NH, and SC and NV as well actually.

Plus, polls in 2009/2010 showed Clinton within striking distance of primaring Obama.

To some extent it would not be exactly surprising if a top tier primary challenger were to get 40% against Trump though unless Trump screws up badly he should still be able to prevail against any challenger. Anyway this poll is obvious #fakenews but still a good April fools joke. Wonder what a genuine poll would have as numbers.
