Is Tidewater really as big as the map implies? I would have though immigration would have taken a bigger bite out of it, or is this a historical map?

Hypothetical nations people draw typically have the characteristic of looking like no actual nation. Curiously this becomes much more probable if these fictional countries are based off real geography.

It doesn't make sense.  It certainly oversimplifies things.  Quebec and southern Louisiana forming a nation?  Ontario is with eastern Nebraska but not New York?  No.

Yeah. Halifax county Virginia is not tidewater. The ozarks are not Appalachia. And you can have cultural exclaves within a region.

It looks like the "Beyond Red and Blue" map from the Commonwealth Project.  I've posted that before.  There are some subtle differences, though.

Anyway, FF.  All maps are FF.  I like maps.

In a macro-sense, it doesn't look too bad. But when you look at the fine details there are some clear problems. The Midlands doesn't really make sense to me.

The idea here is that there is some cultural continuity between Southside Virginia and rural Tidewater, and between Ozarks and Appalachia.

seriously though, I want to know what makes Stutsman and Kidder counties, ND having more in common with Philadelphia than they do with Bismarck or Fargo.

Another discussion of the map took place earlier this year.

I cant think of even the remotest explanation for the borders of the "midlands.".

Mapmaker A: Hmmm...what should we do with Ontario?
Mapmaker B: Make it its own region.
A: No, we can't do that. Our whole point is to show that Canada and the United States are actually the same thing and the border is totally arbitrary.
B: Let's make it part of something else then. Yankeedom?
A: No, Yankeedom has to be a narrow strip.
B: The Far West?
A: It's not very far west.
B: New France?
A: What part of "Destroy Canada" do you not understand?
B: First Nations?
A: Roll Eyes
B: I have an idea! Let's make it part of The Midlands!
A: But then it wouldn't be contiguous.
B: I have an idea! Let's make a connection between the two in North Dakota! None of our readers have been to North Dakota, so they'll think it's cool and edgy and we've informed them about that unique cultural phenomenon that is Slightly-East-Of-Central North Dakota, which is more similar to Philadelphia and Toronto than anything else!
A: Great idea! Let's have it snake into northeastern New Mexico to make it even weirder!
B: Yeah!

If you think that this map is bad, you should read Colin Woodward's book.

Posters on this site could pick apart Albion's Seed or Joel Garreau's Nine Nations of North America at length, but both offer better analysis, more nuance, and more thoroughly researched versions of what Woodward attempts in American Nations.

Question: Should I read Albion's Seed? I have it on my 'to read' list but haven't bought it yet.

As cultural history I found it very engaging, regardless of how far one takes the views that these 'folkways' continue to impact regional differences 2-4 centuries later. I think you'd enjoy it as a fan of the good historical anecdote.

Horrible Map. The Midlands makes no sense, for reasons already described. Also, Fulton County and DeKalb County are apparently part of the Deep South, while Cobb County isn't. What? I guess I live three minutes from an international border. Also, how is New Mexico even part of Appalachia in the first place? Why is that one strip of land in northern Iowa part of Yankeedom?

So many questions.
