Since 1980, every eventual Republican nominee who easily won the nomination largely or in a short time won two of the three first key Republican contests (Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina).

But in 2012, the Republican primary race was wide open since Santorum won Iowa over Romney by only 34 votes, Romney won New Hampshire and Gingrich won South Carolina.

How would the 2012 Republican primary race would have looked like if Romney won the Iowa caucuses? Would he have won the nomination earlier?
