Socially both states seem fairly moderate. However New Mexico seems much more socially polarised being much more diverse than Minnesota.

Economically in the past, it would have been clearly been Minnesota. However with the end of the farm crisis and the decline of industrial unions have caused Minnesota to trend economically to the right (compared to other states). Meanwhile New Mexico has seen a large influx of Hispanics which has caused the state to trend economically to the left.

I would still say Minnesota is the more economically left wing state, however if these trends continue (collapse of industrial unions in Minnesota and the influx of Latinos in New Mexico) I will expect New Mexico to become the more economically left wing state in the future.

Judging by trends, Minnesota. New Mexico is now solidly blue, Minnesota is now only lean blue.

Internally at the state level I'm not too familiar with either place, but in terms of presidential elections, the math is very simple based on average distance from center since 2012.

Minnesota -1.625
New Mexico -6.21

20 years from now, MN will be a red (atlas blue) state. New Mexico is already the Democrat poor man version of Mississippi.

Minnesota now, even if New Mexico is more culturally conservative.
