1989-1993: Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan/Sen. Paul Simon
1993-2001: Sen. Nancy Kassebaum/Sen. Charles Evers
2001-2003: Gov. Howard Dean*/Sen. Carol Moseley Braun
2003-2009: Gov. Carol Moseley Braun**/Fmr. Gen. Wesley Clark
2009-2017: Gov. George Pataki***/Sen. Elizabeth Dole

*One of the more popular Presidents, Dean was widely respected for implementing a revenue-neutral universal healthcare system, and for replacing most welfare with a supplemental income of up to $16,000, for everyone making under $20,000. Dean was forced to resign due to a severe case of pneumonia that followed a somewhat severe form of influenza. Dean is still widely praised for his domestic leadership.
**Braun’s introduction of the VAT of 9.5% allowed her to cut income rates by 2-6%, depending on the bracket, and to flatten the corporate tax rate to just five brackets, with the top bracket at 31.5%. This greatly reduced the deficit, as did her making the supplemental income at $15,000 for those making up to $18,000. Her alliance with President Rong Yiren of China, Russian President Boris Berezovsky, and Indian Prime Minister Sonia Gandhi initially caused concerns with Prime Minister Ian Lang, but this was eventually overcome when Yiren and Berezovsky diplomatically backed Britain against President Kirchner in the Second Falklands War, when Kirchner, Evo Morales, Hugo Chavez, Ricardo Lagos, Yugoslavian President Joška Broz, and a handful of other socialists and members of the Non-Aligned Movement declared Britain to be unlawfully occupying Argentine territory. Sonia Gandhi was forced not to take a position by her own position as Secretary of the NAM.
***Pataki immediately raises the VAT to 16.5%, balancing the budget completely. The left over money is put towards NASA, giving them a $95 billion budget. OUTCOME OF SECOND FALKLANDS WAR LATER HERE

In the early 2000s, Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia were at each other's throats over an energy crisis. How did Lagos, Kirchner, and Morales reconcile their conflict to team up against a vastly more powerful nation?

Military Coup in America
While the people of America have now elected Polk five times, many military leaders are fed up with 18 years of the same leadership. On July 4, 1866 the majority of the military rallies against the current administration. They storm Washington, surround the White House and demand the president Polk be handed over. After being refused, the troops enter the White House and shoot Polk. All other staff are shot or taken prisoner. An interim military government is to be put in place, but many doubt it will be temporary.
Military Government of America
1866: Ulysses S Grant (Military) is appointed president.

43. George W. Bush (20 January 2001 – 10 May 2005)
44. Dick Cheney (10 May 2005 – 20 April 2007)
45. Craig Thomas (20 April 2007 – 4 June 2007)
Nancy Pelosi (4 June 2007 – 29 July 2007)
46. Tom Daschle (29 July 2007 – 20 January 2009)
47. Mitt Romney (20 January 2009 – 20 January 2013)
48. Barack Obama (20 January 2013 – present)

May 10, 2005
Tbilisi, Georgia
Vladimir Arutyunian threw a grenade at U.S. President George W. Bush while he gave a speech. The grenade exploded, killing Bush and six others around him, and injuring several more. Vice President Dick Cheney received the news and was sworn in later that day.

President Cheney appointed Senator Craig Thomas as his vice president. Despite them being from the same state this was not an issue as Cheney did not plan to run in 2008. On April 20, 2007, Cheney suffered a fatal heart attack while sitting at his desk in the Oval Office. Thomas had been diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and died in June of that year. Since Thomas had not had enough time to choose a vice president Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi became acting President. Speaker Pelosi then appointed a VP. Since the 2008 election was well underway Pelosi decided to appoint someone who would not run, former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle.

John Edwards won the Democratic nomination, defeating Chris Dodd and Hillary Clinton, and after allegations of an affair arose in August 2008 he withdrew from the race, leaving his VP pick, Kathleen Sebelius, at the top of the ticket. Due to the 2008 recession and fury over the Edwards scandal Sebelius lost to Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Romney proved to be highly unpopular, and the things he did to try to relieve the recession didn't help a whole lot. Barack Obama mounted his first presidential bid in 2012, and cruised to victory. He was reelected by a lesser margin over Marco Rubio in 2016.

2008 Presidential election

Mitt Romney/Condoleezza Rice: 270
Kathleen Sebelius/Joe Biden: 268

2012

Barack Obama/Brian Schweitzer: 389
Mitt Romney/Condoleezza Rice: 149

2016

Barack Obama/Brian Schweitzer: 287
Marco Rubio/Nikki Haley: 251

"Last Land Standing"

In the 1960s, successful Cuban-sponsored revolutions occurred in the Congo and in Bolivia, bringing the second communist state in the Americas. Subsequent revolutions between 1968 and 1981 took over Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. Finally, in 1981, Mexico was on the brink of communist revolution. On May 15, 1984, the guerilleros stormed Mexico City and the government of President Miguel de la Madrid surrendered. Later that year, at a speech at Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana, President of Cuba Fidel Castro, President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega, and President of Bolivia Che Guevara announced the formation of the Union of Socialist Latin American Nations, and also a split from the USSR.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the government became extremely weary of the communist threat. In 1976, Ronald Reagan easily defeated President Ford in the Republican primary and selected U.S. Representative Larry McDonald as his running mate. The Republicans joined with conservative Democrats to form the Conservative People's Party. In 1980, Reagan was assassinated.

In 1979, the CPP held 319 seats in the House and 74 in the Senate.

In 1994, the USLAN dissolved, and many countries introduced reforms and democratic elections although all still have left-wing governments. Che Guevara resigned as President of Bolivia in 1998 due to health issues and died in 2007.

Due to the lesser threat and the collapse of the USSR, the CPP drastically declined. The 1996 election was decided by the House of Representatives; the CPP had a narrow 9-seat majority and elected Duke Cunningham. Cunningham lost in a landslide in 2000 to Dennis Kucinich of the Popular Reform party.
