Why is Moore controversial again?

Well he started with the 10 Commandments outside his building, and has fallen from there.

A Strange/Moore/Henry primary will be very interesting

Now all we need is a moderate conservative with the ability to self-fund and no Bentley baggage to run in order to turn the race into a complete free-for-all (ahem, looking at you Del Marsh)

As much as I would love to see Roy Moore in the Senate, I don't want to wind up with a competitive race in Alabama of all places

It's Alabama. He can't lose the GE.

No. No open seat in a red state should be taken for granted by the GOP. Remember what happened in IN and ND in 2012?

Likely R.

A more relevant situation than Indiana and North Dakota would be Massachussets in 2010, since any Democrat who could potentially win this seat would ultimately lose in 2020.

I could see Ron Sparks  or even Jim Folsom Jr. beating Roy Moore, especially if 2018 is a Democratic wave.  Walter Maddox might also be able to pull it off, but I don't know enough about him to say for sure.

I'm curious, how do you see a path?

a democrat win goes from 0% to 2% if Roy Moore wins the nomination. Moore only won election Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice by 3 points, in the same year Romney won the state by over 20 points. Moore is a major liability + Special Election Turnout being only voters who GIVE A RIP ABOUT ALABAMA + the fact Alabama voters are probably pissed about corruption (hopefully) + (hopefully) a talented Democratic candidate ala Folsom, Maddox, or even Sparks.

This should be getting more attention than it is.  Between JBE next door and Mark Kirk in IL after the Blagojevich shenanigans, there is a narrow Dem path to victory here.

I was fairly certain he didn't actually change parties, but only contemplated it?

If he is still a Democrat, I imagine the AL GOP could just re-cut the 2010 ads used against him.

Brooks entering the race really f--ks things up for the conservative wing of the party and causes a vote split between Brooks and Moore. Strange would likely win, although I wouldn't be shocked if Democrats try to recruit just in case Moore wins the primary.

Alabama does primary runoffs, so the vote split isn't as important

Good point; I had forgotten about that. I still think Strange has the best chance.

Yeah, Democrats need to try to convince a decent challenger to jump in here just in case Moore wins.

Brooks really goofed yesterday saying good people don't have pre-existing conditions.

Trot out some cancer patients and children with rare genetic disorders, a few sexual assault survivors.
