Jones deserves to win this election. He is such a good man. He's more christian than even Moore claims himself to be, yet Evangelicals rather a pedophile than a man with a D next to his name.

Does it not occur to you that they support someone who is rather transparently being subjected to a politically motivated witch hunt.

Consider the facts. In the Washington Post story it gave three accounts of Moore courting young women who were, according to Alabama law, of marriageable age. Perhaps you think that the age of consent in Alabama is too low (or more likely you think that young people should be sexually active for a number of years before getting married and starting a family). These stories describe Moore behaving in a highly proper and chaste manner, not only in public but also in private, always asking the mothers permission to court and not engaging in any premarital sex.

In the fourth story however the pattern of behaviour was totally different, abusive, secretive and unchaste. It could have sounded believable on its own but it completely failed to tally with the personality described in the other accounts.

Today's performance really seals it for me for this being BS. Another Oscar nominated Gloria Allred production. Today's Allred 'victim' came out with a statement that was not only describing yet another completely different MO but which read like bad fiction in a trashy novel. A well deserved Oscar nomination for all the over the top acting and fake crying but still pretty transparently fake.

If she gets an Oscar, you get a Razzie for worst performance in the role of rape apologist.

Wait so can someone explain the mechanism by which Jeff Sessions becomes Senator again (as the rumors are saying)?

Probably:

Moore wins and is expelled.
Sessions resigns as AG.
Gov. Ivey appoints Sessions to fill the vacancy and calls another special election.

No one should really be surprised by EnglishPete here. He defends most Republicans like this. The highest burden of proof is required for Republicans, while minimal proof required for everyone else. This is a story he was never going to believe unless Moore was caught loving on kids on video tape, 100% visible, and even then I still suspect he'd find ways to nitpick. The only thing that never ceases to amaze me about him is how oblivious to his own behavior he is. From his perspective, everything seems logical, straightforward and quite dumbfounding to him how no one else sees it the way he does.

Factoring in his deep distrust of the media and any other organizations or people that attempt to fact check conservatives, he is a very good example of the wave of paranoia that has infected conservatives over the past decade or two. They can't possibly be wrong, or possibly pick the worst candidates, no, everything is a conspiracy against them Smiley

-

Anyway, let's please try not to derail this thread. As a veteran of previous EnglishPete derailments, I won't hesitate to forcefully move this thread back on track.

If he wins, he will not be expelled. Having a full caucus is what Republicans want.

They still would. He gets expelled, then Ivey appoints Strange again (or maybe Sessions.)

It's a lot less complicated to keep Moore. They won't expel him.

Doesn't it just require a simple majority to refuse to seat him?

Democrats + Corker, Flake and someone else (McCain, Collins, Hatch?)

Darn it, Virginia, you weren't supposed to admit it!  Now the cat is out of the bag.

To be fair, most Atlas conservatives have denounced Moore.

Doubtful.  See Powell v. McCormack (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powell_v._McCormack).

Let's all take a moment and recognize the fact that EnglishPete perfectly represents the hundreds of thousands of Alabama Republicans that will happily vote for Moore. He is no outlier.

I can't wait to hang Moore around the necks of every Republican.

This makes the Nancy Pelosi stuff look like child's play.

You still have time to do the right thing, GOP.

Knowing Democrats, they'll probably be too stupid to use this strategy because it's "insensitive to Southerners" or some BS.

Wouldn't surprise me.

You are already seeing some dumb liberals using the Moore stuff to reevaluated Bill Clinton (cough Chris Hayes cough).

And these people wonder why the right runs circles around them...

How did none of this come about in any of his court races? Are there no investigative journalists in Alabama?

Trick question?

My guess would be nobody bothers to investigate Alabama Republicans since they are guaranteed a win even if exposed as a pedophile.

Court races are low profile contests that no one cares about. Thus, no investigative research takes place.

Alabamas newspapers are notoriously terrible and are tabloid-level rags.

They're all uncritical right-leaning newspapers that are cozy with government. Investigative journalism, at least on matters like this, is not a priority.

Nuanced analysis is pretty much gone it seems, based on some of the posts here. In my opinion:

-Can Moore still win? Of course.
-Will Moore win? Maybe, maybe not.
-Can Jones win? Of course.
-Will Jones win? Maybe, maybe not.
-Is the race pretty competitive at the moment? Yes.
-Who is favored to win? Maybe Jones, if by a little bit.
-Is there still a lot of time left in the race with the potential for further developments? Yeah.

I agree and hope moore wins but I still think Moore should drop out because of the fact it’s risking a safe senate seat in a safe state.

What needs to happen is that Luther Strange must immediately resign. A new senator would be appointed to fill his seat, and a new special election would be called. Unfortunately, it's too late to take Moore off the ballot at this point. Strange gives no indication that he'd do this, but it would be the right thing not only for the GOP but for America. If he doesn't, the best thing that can happen from a republican perspective is Moore winning then being forced to resign, which would also lead to another special election.

Um no there is no reason to believe a new election would need to be called. The governor would just appoint a placeholder and the current special election would still fill the seat.
