Ileana's Dream

Ileana had oversaw the creation of a new party, winning a decent amount of seats. But she worried for the future of her young party - with no obvious heir, Ileana could not retire without the Civic Union falling apart.

She also knew that her party could never end up leading the country as a primary party in a coalition. The seats her party could target simply weren't there - too economically left-wing Labor areas and too socially conservative Conservative ares.

There's a way I could solve this.

Ileana still had a rapport with Labor from the days she crossed party lines and defied Liberal leadership to help Pelosi form a government. Without Ileana, the Labor government would not have come into existence.

She had a radical plan: get rid of districts entirely. Instead, mimic the electoral system in the Netherlands, Israel, and other countries. This would allow her party to flourish, as would other parties.

Of course, this required a constitutional amendment -2/3 votes in the Parliament and then a strong majority of approval in a national, compulsory referendum.

She dialed on her phone:

"Hey, Barack. Got a minute to talk? I'm think about cashing in that favor."

Parties in support of this amendment:
Labor
CU
National Alignment
Red Party
Libertarians
Christian Democrats

Parties opposed:
Conservatives
New Deseret
Texan National
Farmers-Populist
All Puerto Rican parties
Paul Ryan
Native Interests (unless seats are set aside)

Tom Marino, the 8th Leader of the Conservative Party

Tom Marino defeated Billy Long in the Conservative party leadership election by a margin of 55%-45%, with most of Black's voters supporting Marino after her endorsement of him. Marino promised Diane Black to maintain her position as Secondary Minister in the Shadow Cabinet.

An interesting element in the runoff was the discussion of Ros-Lehtinen's proposed electoral amendment. While Long was a firebrand in his opposition to the amendment, Marino was much softer in his dissension. It was likely that the amendment would received over 2/3 in the parliament, but only nominal opposition from the Conservative leader would almost guarantee its passage.

Many news organizations suggested that perhaps Marino would not even whip votes in opposition to the amendment, and instead allow MPs to "vote their conscience."

Something Rotten in the State of Texas, part 2
Excerpt from a Vogue article, January 12th, 2019

Progressive nationalism: is such a thing possible? Texan Solidarity Party founder and Texas MSP Wendy Davis thinks so.

"Sid Miller ain't the only one around here who loves Texas."

Davis is perhaps most famous for a 14-hour filibuster to prevent a law restricting abortion from passing; since then, the former Labor Party legislator has been looking to even bigger things: secession, but towards a more leftist direction.

Davis's TSP is the left's foil to Miller's TNP: a democratic socialist, socially liberal, and egalitarian movement that still sees Texas's position in the United States as harming the state's potential.

"Texans pay much more in taxes than then they get back from the federal government – for every dollar they receive, Texans pay a premium of nearly a dime. Imagine how that money can be used to help Texas's struggling regions - whether it's the Rio Grande Valley, the Panhandle, or the inner cities, and help the state move forward as a whole."

TSP, or Solidarity for short, wasn't ready to contest seats in the nation election in November. However, with many defections from both Labor and the Civic Union, Davis believes the party is strongly positioned to gain many seats in the February state parliamentary elections. In fact, polling has had Solidarity nipping at TNP's heels - 34% to the right-wing party's 38%. While Texan branches of national parties are also contesting this election - especially Labor, which holds the second largest number of federal seats from Texas - Solidarity has managed to break out and take second place in the polls. Davis believes that perhaps a Solidarity-Labor alliance could help the left take back Cook House for the first time since 1996.

Solidarity is taking a strong left platform in the election, specifically targeting the oil industry, which it wants to nationalize. Davis points to the success of countries like Norway in providing for their citizens through a nationalization of energy industries.

Davis can perhaps be described as "Nicola Sturgeon in cowboy boots" - a left-nationalist who seeks to radically change life in her state, and to, one day, make it a country.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

-

What are her party's stances on social issues? I think this would be one of the biggest factors of success in Texas (as it seems with most other politics around here). For example, at least OTL, the fact that she was for abortion was a tad of a deal-breaker in the suburbs (along with her horribly bad campaigning skills) in the gubernatorial election in 2014. Although, did I mention she has horrible campaigning skills? Smiley

I don't think Rodrigo has shown any desire to run for office, Ileana won't retire until a successor/heir is found to lead the CU, and maybe, the entire notion of constituencies will be dealt away with.
