Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to run for President!

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.
-Excerpt from Senator Sanders' announcement speech

Key Platform Points:

  • Reinstate a progressive tax system, with increased taxes for the wealthiest 1%
  • Overturn Citizens United. No PACs or SuperPACs will be allowed to support this campaign.
  • Treat climate change as a major threat. Start researching green energy, now
  • Create a major national jobs program. Our infrastructure is crumbling, and rebuilding it will create literally millions of jobs
  • Reform trade policy. Our current trade policy has cost us millions of jobs, while allowing the wealthiest corporations to send jobs overseas. Renegotiate NAFTA and withdraw from TPP.
  • Raise the minimum wage. $7.25 an hour is just inept; the are perople working two or three jobs who can still not afford to put food on the table. The minimum wage must be raised to $15 an hour
  • Close offshore tax havens. Millionaires and billionaires cannot continue to store their money in offshore tax havens despite getting huge tax cuts, while selling the rest of the country down the river
  • Break up the big banks. We narrowly avoided a second Great Depression in 2008, and we cannot afford to have it happen again. Break up the major banks into smaller ones, so that if they go under, the economy doesn't
  • Universal healthcare and college. Every American has the right to a college education and healthcare that doesn't cost the world. We must create Medicare for all and make public college debt-free for students.
  • Be responsible in the use of force. I voted against the Iraq War because it was not a responsible use of force. America is not the world police. I am opposed to the unwise and unnecessary wars in the Middle East, and must instead of going it alone, align ourselves with other nations opposed to ISIS.

Summary: Sanders began his long-shot campaign by focusing in Iowa and New Hampshire, hoping for strong placings in both states. Sanders continued to hit his populist message on the campaign trail, appealing to voters with anti-establishment and progressive rhetoric. He also hit back hard at Warren's insinuations that he's a fringe candidate, calling her out for using the communist talking point that has been extensively used by the Republican Party against him.

Summary:  Sanders continued his campaign, investing heavily in Iowa and New Hampshire, where he believes he has a vague chance of winning. His grassroots campaign continues to rake in money, as a single 24 hour period saw $13 million raised with an average of just $30. Sanders also welcomed the endorsements of two key players in Vermont politics, Governor Shumlin and Senator Leahy, both long-time colleagues of Sanders. The endorsement of Congressman Conyers was a welcome surprise, as Sanders was hoping to get backing from Midwestern progressives, and Conyers' standing as the longest-serving member of the House and as a result, his position as Dean of the House may help with establishment voters.

Okay, with everything that has happened, I'll be unable to post a detailed schedule. So  with that in mind:

Summary Sanders focused this week on organising his campaign in the Super Tuesday states, while his surrogats camapigned for him in Iowa, Nea Hampshire and Nevada, attempting to focus thekr efforts on these critical eary states. In particular, surrogates were taught to emphasize Sanders' decisive straw poll win in Iowa as proof that the progeessive movement is surging.

I haven't had time, so I'll post a summary again.

Sanders, boosted from his endorsement from the AFL-CIO, took every opportunity to be seen with the President of the organization, Richard Trumka, who adopted a fiery, attack-dog like speaking style,  slamming Biden and Warren for not doing enough to protect the workers of the country. The organization also mobilised its formidable political machine, expected to be in action when the new year begins.

Sanders himself campaigned heabily in Iowa, attempting to shore up his lead there, as well as New Hampshire, where he continues to appear with Governor Lynch. Sanders also conducted many campaign events in Nevada and South Carolina, while Governor  Dayton and Congressman Ellison campaigned for him in Minnesota. In addition, Bernie's wife, Jane O'Meara Sanders, hit the campaign trail for her husband, meeting with several hundred voters in Michigan with Congressman John Conyers. Moreover, Governors Brown and Inslee, accompanied by Senator Baldwin, focused their efforts on Massachusetts, where they hope to cut in to Warren's support.

In addition, the band Green Day began a fundraising tour. Called "Berning Man", the tour will run until March 2016, and feature dates all across the country. The tour is expected to rake in millions of dollars in donations for the campaign.

I'll have to post a summary again. This should be the last time.

Summary: Senator Sanders spent this period organising his ground campaign in the early states, beefing up his volunteer corps in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. Moreover, Sanders' surrogate, Richard Trumka, blasted Biden's endorsement of Warren, labeling Biden "A man more than willing to sell out labor for a spot in a Warren administration". Trumka was immediately berated by Sanders and his campaign manager Jeff Weaver. Trumka then apologised for his remarks.

John Lynch also sounded extremely combative on the campaign trail for Sanders in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, in an interview with Anderson Cooper, Keith Ellison questioned Warren's claims to be a progressive when she has the endorsement of people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, who in later years have become known for their hostility towards the left, and implied that the only reason they backed Warren was because they were afraid of Sanders' "political revolution".

Senator Tammy Baldwin also took an aggressive approach. While campaigning with Russ Feingold in their home state of Wisconsin, she called the AFL-CIO's endorsement of Sanders "Proof that he is the only candidate who will stand up for the workers of this country."

In the meantime, Green Day began their fundraising tour for Sanders. The first shows have resulted in a massive financial injection for the campaign. Adding to this, the Sanders campaign released its financial report for the campaign:

Largest donation: $35,000 from AFL-CIO

Average donation: $27.31

Total raised last month: $39 million

Sanders has called this proof that big donors are not necessary to fund a successful campaign.

Finally, Sanders made a pledge to run as a Democrat in all future elections.

I'll have to post a summary again.

Summary of Sanders 2016 campaign leading into new year: Sanders hit the campaign trail hard in the lead-up to the new year, sometimes doing six or seven rallies a day. He focused extensively on Iowa and New Hampshire, but also dispatched surrogates like Feingold, Baldwin, and the Browns to places like Florida, South Carolina and Texas, where Sanders is expected to appear in the New Year.

Sanders also unveiled a new policy at a rally in New Hampshire alongside Gov. Lynch: Paid family leave for up to 3 months off work each year, and accumulating every year not used. Sanders cited a woman needing to give birth to a child among other reasons for it.

Sanders also met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a hero of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and advocate for human rights all over the world. The productive meeting ended with the famed anti-apartheid warrior endorsing Sanders, while also implying that his deceased friend Nelson Mandela would have done the same. Sanders also welcomed the backing of the Harvey Milk Foundation, vowing to stand up for LGBT rights.

Finally, Sanders spent the 24th, 25th, 26th and 31st with his wife Jane in Burlington.

Summary again. Should be back to normal in a few turns.

Summary for January 1-14, 2016: Sanders kicked off the New Year by celebrating with his wife in their hometown of Burlington, Vermont. On the 3rd, Sanders struck out in the direction of Iowa, where h hosted several rallies until the 7th, when he headed to New Hampshire. Once there, He campaigned all over the state with Gov. Lynch. On the 9th, he was joined by Gov. Brown in Nevada, where he campaigned until the 11th. On the 12th, he kicked off his campaign in Texas, holding rallies in most major cities.

By the end of the fortnight, Sanders was building infrastructure in Texas, where he hopes for a decent showing.
