What did the Democrats give up in exchange?

According to this article, increased spending on border security and the Pentagon. There's definitely more to this budget that hasn't been released yet.

If Trump had any balls, he'd veto this. The GOP gets almost nothing based on that article.

That seems reasonable. Surprisingly so, coming from Congress.

Republicans get to fund the government and not be blamed for a shutdown, even though they control all three branches. That's what they get.

Trump vocally supported Planned Parenthood during the primary debates. No surprise that he doesn't care to shutdown the government over them.

Republican presidents are "pro-life" only during election season. They know that they can't win this battle or don't want to fight it.

But Trump is a fraud, so not exactly surprising. He was never pro-life, he just needed the votes of pro-lifers (and if it weren't for them, he wouldn't be in the White House right now).

This is a myth. Trump appointed Gorsuch and that's all they care about, would be more accurate. The PP was always just a side battle that came about due to James O'Keefe ratf__ing operation against ACORN in September 2009 (remember ACORN was to blame for getting Obama elected; in their minds it was real). That was so successful, they decided to go after PP next. They weren't so successful with videos, but they did manage to make funding of PP a national issue. But the whole thing has always been secondary to pro-lifers behind SCOTUS.

Is anyone really surprised by this?

If Republicans dug their feet in on defunding Planned Parenthood, the government would most certainly be shutting down.

Let's see what actually happens (we also could defund it in the Obamacare repeal), but we need to defund MURDERERS immediately.

Well, sometimes you have to shut down the government to get your agenda through. Just the way it is. And with how important defunding PP is, the GOP needs to do it.

But, why did we compromise with the Democrats at all?  We have majorities in both chambers- there is no reason to give murderers money to murder more people!  I'm disgusted!  Maybe we can get a coalition of the far-right (acting for the right reasons) and the far-left (acting for the wrong reasons) to stop this thing, but I am devastated right now.

You can't do CRs through reconciliation. You can choose to get 8 Democrats by compromise or by shutting down the government until Dems give in, but either way, you need 8 democratic senators on board.

Trump is very supportive of Planned Parenthood. It's obviously a very critical organization we cannot do without. Get rid of abortion through the courts. That's the only way.

Let's see what actually happens (we also could defund it in the Obamacare repeal), but we need to defund MURDERERS immediately.

Anything "defunding" Planned Parenthood is DOA in the Senate unless Republicans opt to "defund" it through reconciliation. And even that might be tough for them considering likely defections from Republicans like Collins, Murkowski, and maybe even Heller if a sufficient amount of pressure is put on him.

Also, when it comes to the issue of Planned Parenthood, I really hate the "defunding" terminology that Republicans have successfully implanted in everyones heads. The government doesn't cut a blank check to Planned Parenthood, the law already prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions.

Shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood is a surefire way for Republicans to lose their coveted majority in the House come 2018.

Also Republicans don't have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, that's why they have to compromise.

Paul Ryan should have straight up told the democrats this :

You want planned parenthood funded well then fine agree to 70 billion dollars in cuts to other domestic spending or  dont filibuster tax reform and welfare reform. Also give that deal on live television .

Planned Parenthood is a nonstarter, that's why. They simply don't have any leverage when it comes to this issue.

I guess my only hope is that SCOTUS will not only overturn Roe, but additionally say that the 14th Amendment applies equally to unborn babies because we sure know that the GOP in Congress is going to chicken out from actually passing a national Life at Conception Act.
