To be fair, both of those shows took a slight downturn when Macfarlane joined.

I feel like I can't say more than what's been posted above. I would have to add that the small selection of clips I've seen showing Maher's "cleverness" has been downright awful. There is a class of people (only partly on the left) that seem to believe that the mere act of pointing our a perceived contradiction constitutes whit or comedy. I cannot remember if this was Maddow, Maher, or both, but one in particular that struck me was how there were Republicans vying for office under the banner of small government, but that they themselves were trying to become government employees in the process. Wow. McFarlane as far as I can tell has a much better sense of humor.

Maher is smarter and better ideologically, Macfarlane is better comedy-wise. Neither is good personally.

My favorite parts are when Maher corners somebody with a question, they give a reasonable and logical answer, that disagrees with his viewpoints, and he throws up his hands like he's talking to an idiot.
