Even though GOP  gerrymandered many maps for congress, will the Dems pick seats up in 2018?

Most likely, but even with no gerrymandering, the current Democratic coalition would have a tough time retaking the House. The strategy of getting all your votes in urban areas can win presidential elections but doesn't do much when you have to carry the geographically diverse territory necessary to hold 218 seats in the House. Neutral maps with compact districts would still tend to pack Democratic voters into a few districts that vote 80+% D because the voters have already packed themselves into a few geographically small areas that vote 80+% D.
