Wait, you would support Nixon over McGovern?!

In retrospect, no. I tried to put myself in the wayback machine for that one. Nixon gets a bad wrap that isn't always deserved.

It isn't? What exactly is so great about Nixon that everyone seems to be missing?

The fact that his 1972 opponent was not-so-great.

From a libertarian socialist perspective, McGovern was very nearly perfect.

Fixed that for you.

Huh? Are you a libertarian? While not "perfect," McGovern was much better than Nixon from a libertarian perspective...

Right, because the asshole who initiated the War on Drugs, escalated the War in Vietnam (and made illegal incursions into Cambodia), increased the powers of the State and took the U.S. off the gold standard is a perfect fit for libertarians.

Jesus.

Yes, McGovern. There was virtually no economic difference in policy between McGovern and Nixon (both campaigned on a minimum living wage; Nixon, of course, didn't attempt to deliver), but McGovern was vastly more libertarian in foreign and domestic policy than Nixon could have ever hoped to be.

The American Conservative wrote an excellent "revisionist" profile of McGovern: Come Home, America. imo, it should be required reading for any "libertarian."

To this day, McGovern's reputation remains muddied due solely to the misrepresentations of his enemies, rather than on the actual George McGovern. The victors get to write the history books after all...

McGovern proposed to vastly increase the state's involvement in the economy, health care, etc. His foreign policy was basically the same as Nixon's at that time. Calling him a libertarian is a complete joke.

If you wanted to vote for a libertarian candidate in 1972, why not vote for, um, the actual libertarian candidate, Hospers, who won an electoral vote?

Hospers was only on the ballot in Colorado and Washington, winning a total of 3,674 votes (compare that to joke candidate Dr. Spock, who ran fifth with 78,759 votes; or even the Communist candidate, who received 25,597 votes). He certainly didn't "win" that electoral vote- a faithless Nixon elector gave it to him.

Hospers endorsed George W. Bush in 2004, as well. I can see why a libertarian would have problems with him.

Others Hospers lost to are the Socialist Labor candidate, the two Socialist Workers candidates, the Prohibition candidate and "Unpledged Socialist Workers Electors".

Hmm.

WJB's populist agenda was just part of a slippery slope anyway. He just wanted to promise lots of short-term inflation to further his demagogic career. If silver stocks ran low, he'd have been demanding something else be done to loosen monetary policies. Eventually we'd get to where we are today with government fiat money printed at will.

And you take the racist Stevenson/Kefauver ticket?

Eisenhower believed that appointing Earl Warren to the Supreme Court was his worst decision as President and said white southerners were "good people; they just don't want their sweet daughters sitting in classrooms with some big buck ns."
