As always, no hindsight.

I'm also basing this to a large extent on the amount of media available in the time period, and what my perspective may have been, as opposed to being all-knowing about the candidates.

*Denotes that I despise all major candidates, thus forcing me to vote for the Socialist or equally left-wing party.

**1900 would actually be wide open for me. While I agree more with Bryan (which is why I'd vote for him in 1896), dislike McKinley for his expansionism, and Debs would appeal to me as a Socialist-leaning progressive. I guess I'll pick Debs.

NOTE: if you can't see who I planned on voting for, just highlight everything, as some of the colors I used obscure the words.

I'm just going to stick to 1928.  (Note, I would've voted Republican in the 1800's, because the Democrats were so conservative then).

1928:  Smith
1932:  FDR
1936:  FDR
1940:  FDR
1944:  Dewey
1948:  Truman
1952:  Stevenson
1956:  Stevenson
1960:  Kennedy
1964:  LBJ
1972:  McGovern
1976:  Carter
1980:  Carter
1984:  Mondale
1988:  Dukakis
1992:  Clinton
1996:  Clinton
2000:  Gore
2004:  Kerry
2008:  Obama

You skipped 1968 and what's with the Dewey vote in 1944?

Whoops, I forgot 1968.  I would have voted for Humphery, of course.

I would have voted for Dewey, but only because of the internment camps.   I would have supported Henry Wallace if he had ran that year as the nominee.

Wallace did run in '48 by uniting the Progressive and American Labor parties. I would've voted for him. I dislike Truman and know too little about Dewey. Plus, Wallace is awesome.

I don't know, my earlier lists were pretty bizarre although I was just trolling about voting for Nixon and Bush...

I guess I'll do primaries.

1960: Barry Goldwater (write-in); Adlai Stevenson or Wayne Morse with hindsight
1964: Barry Goldwater; Barry Goldwater (write-in)
1968: Eugene McCarthy (write-in); Eugene McCarthy
1972: Pete McCloskey; Eugene McCarthy
1976: Ronald Reagan; Fred Harris, Jerry Brown if I can chose candidates who weren't running at the time of the MA primary.
1980: Ronald Reagan; Jimmy Carter, Jerry Brown if I can chose candidates who weren't running at the time of the MA primary.
1984: Barry Goldwater Jr. (write-in); George McGovern
1988: Jack Kemp or Pat Robertson with hindsight; Eugene McCarthy (write-in)
1992: Pat Buchanan; Jerry Brown
1996: Steve Forbes or Pat Buchanan with hindsight; Ross Perot (write-in)
2000: Steve Forbes; Bill Bradley
2004: Ron Paul (write-in); Dennis Kucinich
2008: Ron Paul; Mike Gravel*

*I very stupidly voted for Obama IRL, however I don't think I would with my present views even without hindsight.

Well, why Hoover in 1932 and Goldwater in 1964?

On Hoover: I am not confident FDR was a great President during the Depression for actual policy, but FDR was great at restoring some semblance of hope. Had FDR been President in 1931, people would probably have demanded that their next President be a businessman who would know how business worked. That President could have very well been Hoover. FDR though, is in my opinion, the President for WWII and so I left him there.

On Goldwater: LBJ could not pay for the Great Society. Had LBJ moved from Vietnam and established the Great Society, LBJ would be my selection. Goldwater was hawkish on Vietnam, but would have actually been able to pay for it (something I do not necessarily agree with). Partially too, I would assume some of that would be hindsight; Goldwater was a big critic of the religious right in the 1980s and that would have been something I supported being fairly socially libertarian.
