Those are more out of the lesser-of-three-evils mentality than anything else. At least their damage would be limited to the South, although Curtis LeMay would make me seriously reconsider Wallace.

Why Debs,Thomas,Thurmond,Baldwin?.
[/quote]

Debs' overt socialism was preferable to the corporatist "Progressivism" of his opponents. Thomas was the only choice opposed to interventionism. Thurmond is a protest vote against the welfare statism and interventionism of his opponents. Baldwin is less nausea-inducing than Barr.

I'll try another strategic lesser of two evils. Considering that a President's influence in foreign policy is less restricted by Congress than domestic policy, I will take into account which candidate begets divided government and is less militaristic:
1789: Clinton and Telfair
1792: Clinton and Jefferson
1796: Jefferson and Burr
1800: Jefferson and Burr
1804: Jefferson
1808: Madison

1812: Clinton
1816: King
1820: Unpledged electors

1824: Crawford
1828: Jackson
1832: Jackson
1836: Van Buren
1840: Van Buren
1844: Polk
1848: Taylor
1852: Pierce
1856: Buchanan
1860: Douglas
1864: McClellan
1868: Seymour
1872: Greeley
1876: Tilden
1880: Hancock
1884: Cleveland
1888: Cleveland
1892: Cleveland
1896: Bryan
1900: Bryan
1904: Parker
1908: Bryan

1912: Taft
1916: Hughes
