In reality, I would have abstained from voting in many of these "lesser of two evils" contests, but since I was supposed to be typing up a report, why not waste time filling out this whole list....

Wait, you would support Nixon over McGovern?!
That is indeed pretty ridiculous.

Wait, you would support Nixon over McGovern?!

In retrospect, no. I tried to put myself in the wayback machine for that one. Nixon gets a bad wrap that isn't always deserved.

It isn't? What exactly is so great about Nixon that everyone seems to be missing?

The fact that his 1972 opponent was not-so-great.

Nixon was one of America's worst presidents, while his 1972 opponents formed one of the last decent tickets to be nominated by the Democratic Party.

From a libertarian socialist perspective, McGovern was very nearly perfect.

Fixed that for you.

Huh? Are you a libertarian? While not "perfect," McGovern was much better than Nixon from a libertarian perspective...

The American Conservative wrote an excellent "revisionist" profile of McGovern: Come Home, America. imo, it should be required reading for any "libertarian."

To this day, McGovern's reputation remains muddied due solely to the misrepresentations of his enemies, rather than on the actual George McGovern. The victors get to write the history books after all...

I'm pro silver.

I personally prefer silver to gold, but that's not a good reason to wreck the economy.

Hmm.

WJB's populist agenda was just part of a slippery slope anyway. He just wanted to promise lots of short-term inflation to further his demagogic career. If silver stocks ran low, he'd have been demanding something else be done to loosen monetary policies. Eventually we'd get to where we are today with government fiat money printed at will.

Why on earth would you vote for Mondale in 1984 but then vote for Reagan's VP in 1988?

I'm guessing that's aimed at me. Reagan < Mondale < Bush

Mondale was the lesser of two evils, and Bush was much more appealing to me than Reagan.

How? Bush 41 was one of the worst ever.

Sorry Giovanni, but if you would vote for Mondale over Reagan, then you probably shouldn't be in the GOP. Sad

True, Reagan was bad, but Mondale was trash. The Dems should have nominated Hart.

Yeah, Mondale was just pathetic.

Not significantly moreso than Reagan.

For all Reagan's flaws, Mondale was not someone to accept as an alternative. Of course, if he were, he would have won a state other than MN (a .18% win, mind you, and Reagan refused to campaign there).

That's why I'd have voted for Bergland. But in a two-man race, I'd have either voted Mondale or absented.

Why ever vote for Mondale? Huh

I'd want Bush to get the blame for the financial crisis and resulting Great Recession so that a Democrat will be elected in 2008 and possibly 2012 and 2016. If Kerry won in 2004, we'd possibly be looking at a Republican President and Congress right now and possibly for a very long time nonstop.

Right, so you'd put the country through four more years of Bush hell because you wanted that to result in four-eight years of Obama hell. Great.

Probably vote straight GOP since 1856.

You do realize that the GOP and the Democrats have completely switched on most issues since this time?

Actually most issues have themselves completely changed since that time.

Why?

There was no real Republican primary that year to challenge Eisenhower.

What difference was there between '52 and '56 that made you prefer Eisenhower the second time around?

Eisenhower's presidency wasn't so bad.

You know he was an extreme racist, right? Even Goldwater appeared moderate in comparison to him, and you would have voted against Godlwater.

I choose Thurmond because he is from the south, and i choose Johnson because of his ad campaign.

How come you didn't vote for George Wallace in 1968? He's from the South.

I would not vote for Wallace because he was not experienced enough to be president in my opinion, when Nixon led a smart, and hard hitting  campaign.

Thurmond was only governor for two years before his 1948 campaign. Wallace at least finished his first term as governor before 1968.
