Looks like after finishing 2nd in the general Primary, Ralph Norman beat Tommy Pope in the run-off by 200 votes. Ralph Norman was considered more Conservative and more pro-Trump (just Endorsed by Club for Growth). Tommy Pope was considered the Moderate (although endorsed by Trey Gowdy in a TV ad).
Norman now faces Dem Archie Parnell in the General, who seems to be a strong candidate... but has low name ID, as he has no history in Politics.
The 5th District is a Republican District- but I wonder if Parnell has any legs in the general by attracting moderates who voted for Pope? Parnell would need to spend a lot of money on Biographical type ads the next few weeks. With Trump having low Approval- and Norman being a strong supporter of Trump... Parnell could have the right message (although the few ads I've seen were a bit hooky.. he'd be better off with less gimmicky ads that focus on his being a tax/ jobs/ Trade/ financial expert, etc) - but the district is likely too Republican to matter...
(Ralph Norman previously lost the 5th District Congressional Race against Dem John Spratt... But the following term Spratt lost to Mick Mulvaney when the 5th District was redrawn to become a more Republican District.)
Any thoughts on how strong Parnell comes across, etc? (He has a short intro video on his homepage: (
