The minimum age of part-time employment is generally 14, and the minimum age to drop out of school and be employed full-time is generally 16. This means that 14-17 year olds pay taxes without having a say in how much they're taxed or how their taxpayer dollars are spend, and 16-17 year olds aren't always schoolchidren and can work just as long as anyone else but still don't have a say. What, if anything, do you think should be done about this?

Good point. Applies to D.C. residents as well. We tolerate taxation without representation for certain small subsets of the overall population, probably because we generally don't consider it to be too problematic so long as it remains a limited practice.

Lower the voting age and raise the working age to 16.

With the miniscule earnings of the vast majority of <18 workers, they're usually exempt from withholding taxes anyway, or get all of it back. Also, by this logic, you should also exempt minors from paying sales tax or other taxes.

Voting is for adult citizens. You don't need to be a citizen to pay taxes, so why should you need to be an adult?

Ideally, lower the voting age to 16, exempt people under that age from taxes.

This is a great idea that I have never heard before. It makes a lot of sense, and hueylong raises the additional point that D.C needs statehood. Taxation without representation bitches! Throw in a 52nd state while at it (puerto rico and virgin islands) and divide the mess that is california in two. sh**t is way too big. My grammar is fantabulous right now. Aint jet lag a wonderful thing.

Absolutely.

Absurd. The job market for children is tough enough as it is. We pump out graduates with HS diplomas between the ages of 17 and 19 regularly and somehow someone's birthday decides whether they are an adult!?

I love the idea of exempting children from taxes.  Suddenly, there will be a surge of 14-year-olds doing all the grocery shopping for the family. Tongue

I interpreted it to mean income and payroll taxes, not sales.

How can you logically justify that? If paying taxes should entitle you to franchise, minors should be exempt from all taxes, no?

Exemption. The franchise is tied to paying taxes and citizenship. I would have to look up the amount that this would raise the deficit by I am assuming not by that much. This would apply to mostly minimum wage job payroll taxes for HS kids. For state by state basis at first.

are the people voting "exemption" ever going to address this excellent point?

I do think there is some rationale for keeping the voting age at 18. Another part of me remembers people at 16, and they weren't remotely ready to decide the future of the country. 18 wasn't a total turnaround, but they had improved.

As noted there are adults in the US who aren't citizens and can't vote but pay taxes and minors also pay things like sales taxes. By this logic an out of state resident shouldn't have to pay a sales tax either.

I don't want the voting age to be lowered because it would help the wrong side. I also don't see why a person under 18 should earn enough to have to pay taxes. You need to be in school or receive vocational training or do an internship at that age.

This.  Most children (and even college students) don't have to withhold any taxes.  Therefore, this is a non-issue.
