Obviously this argument is kind of pointless until we see the final maps and also know what the political environment is like for Republicans next year. Personally, I expect Republicans to push the limit on what is acceptable in terms of a redraw, but there seems to be enough time to air our grievances if that is the case.

However, even if the map is not that much different in practice, that doesn't necessarily help Republicans if their base is depressed and/or they experience a number of defections on account of Trump's sagging popularity. Let's keep in mind that that pickup opportunities are not strictly limited to districts carried by the relevant party's nominee in the last election.

That being said, all I will say is that a net gain for Republicans is definitely a bold prediction in a GOP midterm that seems to have all the hallmarks of a Democratic wave in the making under what will be a redrawn map due to racial gerrymandering. It's certainly not a prediction I would make, barring a more neutral election where the incumbent isn't deeply unpopular.

We'll see!

Krazen also testified, though he identified himself as the head of the North Carolina GOP, and pointed out that Trump carried 76 counties in 2016.

Say again?

Special master appointed to (possibly) help revise 3 Senate districts and 7 House districts in the new maps

Rules are rules, but this happening seemed pretty obvious. Would be nice if they could just do this from the get-go. It is not reasonable to think that the same people (more or less) who gerrymandered the first maps are not going to try and do it again.

Does anyone here have any insight as to what the long-term plans of the Republican majority in the North Carolina Legislature are regarding redistricting?

I don't have any special insight, but I don't see any reason to believe they won't do exactly what everyone expects, which is to never give up control without a nasty, ugly fight. Looking at all of the changes they have made and are still making to consolidate every last sliver of power (and they have done *quite* a lot..), those are not the actions of a party that would willingly give up gerrymandering after 10 years of 'revenge.' Those are the actions of a party that not only is greedy for power, but almost seems to believe their political opponents have no right to any power despite North Carolina being only a Leans R state that is highly polarized.
