And do they follow it enough to know vital information like how Sankt Andrä voted in the last presidential election?

I force them to, by inserting tidbits into all of our conversations:

Mum: Are you free to come with us to Manchester in August?
Me: I'm as free as Vienna is likely to vote SPO at the next election

Dad: Do you want to watch that new drama on BBC1?
Me: I haven't been this excited since I had the chance to liveblog the funeral of OVP deputy from 2006 to 2008 Gunther Kesselburger.

Sister: Nice weather today
Me: You know what isn't nice? The views of the naive left leftist Van Der Bellen

Mum: How did your exams go?
Me: Isn't the real question what is the education system like in Austria? Let me tell you about that.

During the Presidential Race in Austria my dad followed it slightly but other than that I don't remember anyone in my family ever discussing Austrian politics.

To seriously answer the question:  Nobody in my family could care less about Austrian politics.  However, while I don't follow them closely, I am certainly not offended to find out the jist of what's going on there.

One of my best friends is married to an Austrian, so I guess they do...but no, I'm guessing most of my family couldn't point to Austria on a map.

Anyway, I'm being reminded of a great, and very depressing, Nevil Shuthe's 1957 novel "On The Beach", with Austria being the last country to succumb to the wave of radiation. There even was a movie, starring Gregory Peck.

ustrians themselves did an unsurprisingly creepy TV remake in 2000. Lots of gore.

No. The only foreign politics we follow is Australian politics, and that's only because of our support for the Australian-Slovenian border wall.
