Maybe a kudos system, if the word "like" is too intolerable? I honestly see nothing wrong with giving non-post feedback to posts and don't really understand the opposition here.

Wikia has a kudos system, where you can go and give a 'kudos' to a forum post on a given Wikia.

The results are about what I was expecting. Rating posts has become a bit controversial as Facebook as continued its scourge on humanity.

Although tbh I don't get why it'd be controversial on Atlas:

1. Atlas loves to rate people and "judge" posts. We have tons of archive threads and an Opinion of [user] poll seemingly every week.
2. People already do a sort of pseudo-like. It's called empty quoting. In fact, a couple users in this very thread already suggested they'd rather do that instead. It's use is meant to convey the same thing as a Like would, except that they take up considerable space on a thread page.

I think the concern is that people would be afraid to say unpopular things if it got them a bunch of dislikes, even if said unpopular things might be true.

I wondering if people misunderstood the poll now. The poll wasn't about a Like/Dislike system, it was for a system where people can Like a post and nothing more. If someone made a terrible posts, at worst it would get no Likes.

Oh. I guess just a like feature would be fine. I don't see a problem with that. Is it possible with this forum's software?

If Virginia says so then it must be possible.

Her knowledge about such things is scaring me sometimes.

I oppose having a "like" button mandated by the central forum leadership.

Leave it to the subforums

Fine! Instead of a Like post option, how about a Old Man post option Sado

I'd support it if paired with a dislike button as well. It's better than empty quoting, which clogs up threads.

But Dave would have to reemerge from whatever lair he's currently in and actually put some effort into overhauling the design of the forum.

Would this require an upgrade to a later package of SM, or does 1.1.12 have like feature as an add-on?

SMF 1.1.12 has a 'Karma' feature that only allows rating users and not posts. I don't think SMF 2.0 has it by default but there are mods for it.

Absolutely not. For goodness' sake. Atlas's old-fashioned setup and the use of emptyquoting are quirks that give us a unique character, not bugs to be dispensed with in favor of Web 2.0 generica.

I just noticed that Leip was never actually against the idea of a 'Like' feature in the first place:

Hi -
My thought on this is rather than "like", change the terminology to be "agree".  This would be the method to replace an empty quote.  I still prefer to have posts that reply with more substantive information.  I'm interested in hearing more thoughts on how you think this will influence discussion.

I'll research this a bit more to see what options there are.  I am currently already looking into upgrading the forum to 2.0 -> that will be a big job to bring over all the customizations.

Thanks,
Dave

It would be less cluttered than empty-quoting posts.
