When I think of Carter, I think of a politician who had a clean record and provided the country with a breath of fresh air after Watergate tainted American politics. I think we need someone who's folksy and authentic, yet still progressive. The best people to recreate Carter '76 are Klobuchar and Merkley, maybe Sanders if his popularity doesn't wane in the next 3 years and if the bank fraud story doesn't ruin his reputation.

A democrat who appeals to religious Americans, other than Carter himself, will never be the nominee.

In terms of the understated, friendly role while still being liberal and snatching the nomination with the odds against them?

Merkley. Definitely Merkley.

You don't want the Carter appeal, you want the Reagan appeal.

The Carter appeal of being the guy who tells no lies (albeit in a much darker way), is an outsider changing the system, and folksy (again in a much much darker way)...he's already there.

John Bel Edwards comes closest.

Roy Cooper maybe also? Steve Bullock has also some outsider appeal.

Most Democrats are religious Americans.

I think John Bel Edwards is the only Democrat with any chance of running who fits this description.

Democrats should nominate an aggressive New Atheist to energise millennials.

All 4-6% of them!

But people ARE trying to make this happen.  She's a Senator, she's bi-racial, and she's really hot looking.  (My wife saw me scroll down and he say Libaralrocks' Kamela Harris photo and asked what I was looking at, lol.)  She does NOT, however, project with enough substance to convince Americans that she's anything but better than Trump, and that's not going to do it in 2020.

Carter was the last of his kind; a Southerner selected to unite the disparate wings of the Democratic Party to win a Presidential election.  It was a different Democratic Party then; most Southern elected officials at all levels were conservative Democrats whose ties to the national party were tenuous at best.  Carter was able to cut into George Wallace's support to win THOSE voters over.  (That, by the way, was NOT the formula Bill Clinton used to win in 1992.)  Carter failed to get re-elected because the liberals of the Democratic Party didn't get the message that Half a Democrat was better than no Democrat at all.

None. 80% of evangelicals voted for a man who's on his 3rd marriage and who boasts about sexually assaulting women "because he's so Christ-like." Carter's performance in the South was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
