As someone who grew up in the Midwest and always "observed" it to be a relatively well-off region while simultaneously seeing median income lists where we didn't rank that highly, I have always found the topic of adjusted median income to be interesting.  If you make twice as much in NYC as someone in Lincoln, NE, but the other person enjoys a MUCH more comfortable living, who is really "richer"?  Anyway, I found an interesting article that digs deeper into the "purchasing power" of your average household in each state.  Enjoy:

MN    $72,200
UT    $71,500
IA    $68,100
MD    $67,500
CO    $67,400
NE    $66,800
MO    $66,300
NH    $66,200
WA    $64,800
VA    $63,200
WY    $62,700
AK    $61,300
TX    $61,300
MI    $60,900
KS    $60,600
ND    $60,400
NJ    $60,200
OH    $60,200
SD    $59,800
IL    $59,600
WI    $59,500
CT    $59,300
PA    $59,200
IN    $59,100
DC    $59,000
ID    $58,900
OR    $58,900
MA    $56,400
GA    $56,000
NC    $55,600
MT    $54,600
TN    $54,600
OK    $54,000
AZ    $53,400
DE    $53,100
VT    $52,900
NV    $52,400
AL    $51,500
FL    $51,100
LA    $51,100
SC    $50,500
CA    $50,300
KY    $50,000
AR    $49,800
MS    $48,700
RI    $48,200
WV    $47,700
NM    $47,600
ME    $45,900
HI    $45,200
NY    $43,200

Here was the average per state by region (I used Census regions but included MD, DC and DE in the Northeast):

Midwest: $62,792
West: $57,615
Northeast: $55,925
South: $53,221

These were the only states whose adjusted median incomes dropped below their nominal ones:

Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

What a close election would look like if this was the deciding metric.

Honestly outside of MT, ID, MD, OK and VA, this is a plausible future electoral map.

It sort of looks like the 1976 map, but updated with the demographic trends of the past 40 years (with some outliers as mentioned above).
